The Final Splash

By Julio Angeles
The LPHS varsity swim team successfully completed the 2001-2002 season with a big splash at the UIC natatorium this past Friday 15th of February. The team sure came a long way since late last year when the pre-season took off. With only a handful of swimmers all year, half of which were first year swimmers, the team finished with a record of 7-3 in the regular season. They went on to northern conference qualifications held at Northside Prep Were they qualified for every event in which they participated. The team did well enough at city championships to win medals for all of the events in which they participated, and finishing in sixth place in the overall standings. Congratulations to Ms. Vega-Soto and all the swimmers for an outstanding year. Congratulations and special thanks to seniors Leonard Ruszel, E.F., Andrew Linden, and Chris Dupont for a wonderful year.

Boys Volleyball Team Ready for Battle

By Admir Muzurovic
Winter is slowly fading away, and spring is approaching us with open arms. This means that spring sports are around the corner. The Boys Varsity Volleyball team is getting ready for a completely new season in its attempt to regain the same triumph and glory from two years ago when it won the City Championships. Due to its scorching record of 10-0 in the Green Division last year, the team has been promoted to the strongest division in the city, the Red North, where it will face teams like Lane Tech, Kelvyn Park, Whitney Young, Senn, and Von Steuben. The team will be led by coaches, Mr. Kean and Ms. Kelly and captains, Vinh Tran and Matthew Barge. Tran boasts with enthusiasm: This year will be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to helping out the younger players on the team, and achieving a sense of camaraderie that makes organized sports so fun to participate in. It's all about being on the court with the boys. Tryouts are scheduled to be held during the last week of February and practices are to start in the first week of March. Furthermore, the team is expected to have a very busy schedule with season games usually twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays and three main tournaments on the weekends. One major tournament that the LP team will participate in will occur March 22nd and 23rd at Evanston Township High School where it will face some of the top teams in the state like Evanston, Niles West, Loyola, and Joliet. The next tournament is set for March 30th at suburban North Chicago. Finally, the team will face some of the top teams in the city at the Kelvyn Park tournament April 6th and 7th. Therefore, it promises to be a very successful and enjoyable season. Anybody looking for a good time is welcome to support the team during its games, especially the critical home games, where the battle for the Red North Championship is likely to be decided. The team already appreciates the fan support in advance.
