The fossils around around Smithers B.C. occur in a shale formation which is the only outcropping of Tertiary rocks in the region.  The most common fossil specimens found in the rock formations are fernlike Metasequoia, a type of Redwood tree.  Poplar, Cranberry, and Alder leaves, insects such as mosquitoes, water striders and even fish fossils are also found.  The fossil bed dates back to the Eocene or Ogliocene age.
