MTV 8 Mile Interview - October 2002

Eminem responds to you, as the rapper turned actor fields fan questions, and gives the inside scoop on everything from seeing himself on the big screen to running out of gas in "8 Mile."
Q: I can't wait to see "8 Mile," but I'm even more excited about the soundtrack, which I hear is real sick. What can you tell me about the album itself, like who you collaborated with or what artists are on it? Shane

Eminem: The "8 Mile" soundtrack is sick. It's got a lot of collaborations on it. It's got me. It's got Obie [Trice], 50 [Cent], Jay-Z, Nas, Xzibit, Macy Gray, Taryn Manning, Rakim new song by him, a lot of stuff on it. Check it out when it comes out in stores and go buy it, don't get it off the f---ing Internet.

Q: Do you ever go back to 8 Mile? What is it like there? Alexis

Eminem: Yeah, I do go back to 8 Mile sometimes and it's pretty much the same. It's a lot more racially diverse and it's not as hectic as when I was growing up there, but maybe that's because I'm driving through now in a different car. I'm not running out of gas and stopping on the side of the road with my little gas can, walking to the gas station. Yeah, I do go back there. I got friends there and I visit it sometimes.

Q: What did you think when you first saw yourself up on the screen? Brian

Eminem: [I was] completely mortified. When I seen the first trailer it took me a minute to get over seeing myself on the big screen. I'm used to seeing myself on videos and that's cool. It's music behind me backing me up. To see myself on the big screen was a little weird at first but I'm over it now and I'm cool.

Q: What's the hardest transition from rapping to acting? David

Eminem: Doing videos, there's music to back you up. In acting, there's no music, just dialogue and you've got to be real in every single scene. I'm real in my music, but acting is a huge step for me. Rapping is something that I have a certain level of confidence in and acting is something I kind of went into cold feet. With practicing and rehearsals and things like that, I eventually got warmed up to it and I became a natural at it and hopefully it shows in "8 Mile."

Q: What's the best part and the worst part of the film industry? Emily

Eminem: The best part about the film industry is the fans reactions and rewards for your hard work or whatever. The worst part about it is the work, doing it. The schedule was gruesome and I really worked hard on it so I hope you all see that and appreciate it.

Q: Would you like to make any more films? What kinds of projects are you interested in? Megan

Eminem: I would like to make some more films. No, I wouldn't like to make a film where I'd be in every scene and no, I wouldn't like to make another hip-hop movie, but yes I would like to make another film. Maybe something I'd cameo in or I'd do a shorter part or play, like a maybe not a lead role but a co-star or something. I'd be interested in that. Maybe a comedy or something like that. We'll see what happens, I'm doing my thing with the music now.

Q: In the first stage of your movie when you got up and battled, you looked really scared and kind of froze up. Did that really ever happen? David

Eminem: Yeah, it did happen before, probably one of the first times I ever grabbed the mic in front of like a large crowd of people. I froze up. I didn't completely freeze up like no words came out, I was but grumbling and fumbling over my words and things like that. I got booed a few times and had to learn from it.

Q: I know you do a rap version of "Sweet Home Alabama" in your movie. Were you a rock fan when you were growing up? Matt

Eminem: Yeah, I was a little bit of a rock fan. Growing up in like the '70s and early '80s, I heard a lot of rock music that my uncles and stuff listened to, like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. I couldn't help but be a fan of them coming up, so I do have a little bit of rock influence in me. There is a little bit of a hillbilly side to me, believe it or not.

Q: Besides your own CD, what other albums do you listen to? Inna

Eminem: Right now, 50 [Cent] and Obie [Trice], because I'm in the making of it, so I'm focused on that. Plus they're really dope albums. Not only am I executive producing them, I'm a fan of them and they're signed to my label, Shady Records. They're coming out later this year so keep an eye out for them.

Q: I'm a big fan of yours and I'm just wondering what your next big single is gonna be. Christopher

Eminem: Well, big fan of mine, I don't know what my next big single's going to be, but the next single is gonna be "Superman." Hopefully it will be a big single.

Q: Where do you think you're going to be in 20 years? Ed

Eminem: In 20 years? I don't know. Hopefully still producing music. If I'm still rapping, somebody slap me off the damn stage, but hopefully I'll still be having something to do with the music and maybe acting. Who knows?
