EMERGENCY ASSESSMENT

FIRST-AID
The examiner should also check the pupils for shape and for response to light by using a penlight or covering the eye with one hand and then taking it away. Normally the pupils are equally dilated, but injury to the CNS (Central Nervous System,e.g. head injury) may cause the pupils to dilate unevenly. The patient's level of consciousness should also be assessed. Once the patient has stabilized, it should be done every 15 to 30 mins. If possible it should be done by the same examiner which allows the detection of subtle changes. Please Remember these Emergency Care Level Decisions 1. Is the injury life threatening? 2. What care (first-aid) must be given on site or on the field? 3. Can and should the patient be moved? 4. If the patient is to be moved, what is the best way to do it? 5. What steps are to be taken before the patient is moved? Spinal board? Splinting?Instruction? 6.If the patient is to be moved, where to? 7. How is the patient to be transported? 8. If the injury is not severe enough to require transportation to the hospital, what protocols are to be followed for return to activity? 9.If the patient is not allowed to return to activity, what protocols are to be followed?
