Computer Conflict
Chapter Three
Learning New Things
Mary was happy to be able to get into the chat room again. She was trying really hard to find information on several of of ancestors, and figured if she was to keep posting her Surnames in the chat room, sooner or later someone else would come up with a match to them. Then she would be able to find the missing links she couldn't find anywhere else. She had spoken with her parents and grandparents about the family history, but there was a lot of holes in it and they just could recall who or where everyone was or came from. Mary said hi to all the ones in the room, and noticed most were the sames one that she had met the night before. There were a few new ones so she posted her surnames immediately. She was watching the conversation of a few of the "regulars" and noticed that they were talking of sending files back and fourth to each other. She looked over the web page again and couldn't find anything to click on to send a file to someone, so she asked how they were doing it. One of the regulars told her that they used an instant messaging and file transfer program called GOT IT! for doing that, it was free and could be downloaded from got it!.com. As soon as Mary could write the URL down, she typed it in and her browser was headed Got It! site. Mary read over the "New User" instructions and decided this would be a nice thing to have, so she clicked on the "Download Now" button. The next page that came up was a registration page, and she proceeded to fill it out. She typed in her name, address, city, state, zipcode, phone number, birthdate, household income, and marital staus. Then she hit the "Next" button and selected the things she enjoyed from the list as it said to do. She clicked on the "Finish" button and a small screen appeared asking her to "Open this file from it's location" or "Save this file to disk", she selected the latter and in just seconds it was downloading the file to her hard drive. When it was finished, she clicked on the "OPEN" button, and it started the process of installing the program. After it finished installing it asked if she wanted to "Setup A New Account" or "Use and Existing Account", she clicked on the first one. Now there was a window on her screen telling her she could add other Users to her to Friend List by putting in their Got It! ID numbers or their email addresses. She left it blank and clicked on "Finish". It now opened a small screen over near the right side of her monitor, and had an ID number at the top, that was hers and had a few options in the area just below that. She quickly opened her browser and went into the chat room again. She was so excited, and wanted to see if she could get some users to add to her list. As soon as she said hi to all in the room, she told them she had just installed the Got It! program and gave them her number so they could add her to their list. Several of the regulars gave her their numbers and she started adding them to her list too. Before long she 15 people on her list and was sending and receiving messages with them like a pro. She was typing in the chat room at the same time and was watching what others were saying too. She asked one of the regulars that she had added to her list, if they would teach her to send files. After about fifteen minutes she had received and sent two files. This was really nice, she was so excited that she had learned to do this in such a short time. Mary was really getting good at using the computer and the internet, probably a whole lot fatser then most peole do. Of course she had always been a fast learner and was always eager to try new things. She was talking with six people through the Got It! messages and still trying to keep up with the chat room conversations. She noticed a few were saying their good nights and leaving, which made her wonder why anyone would be going to bed so early. Mary just knew that she had only been on the computer for an hour or so, and as her eyes looked at the clock in the lower right corner of her screen, she almost choked. It was showing 5:19 AM, she turned quickly and looked at the clock across the hall from her room, sure enough it was the correct time. She quickly bid everyone a goodnight and started shutting down everything. She disconnected from the internet and proceeded to shut the computer down and turn it off. Mary quietly climbed the stairs and slipped into the bedroom, she noticed Justyn was still sleeping, she knew the alarm would be going off in a few minutes as she quickly dressed for bed and eased herself down under the covers. Just as she pulled the covers up the alarm went off waking Justyn enough for him to shut it off. Mary thinking quickly, sat up and said, "Good morning Darling, I will get us some coffee". Justyn gave his approval as he arose and headed for the bathroom to get his shower and get ready for the work day ahead. Mary got up and headed downstairs to the kitchen, thinking to herself, "No need for Justyn to know she had been on the computer all night again, she would catch some sleep after he left for work, and still be up by noon or a little later". Mary had the coffee poured and was on her third cup by the time Justyn came down for his. She said she was going to take a shower and get dressed and she kissed Justyn good morning and told him she would call him later at work. Justyn checked the clock on the wall, it was 6:15 so he started gathering his itmes from the den that he had brought home the evening before and decided to leave just a few minutes early. He left the house and in a few minutes was on the road to work. Mary had made it back upsatirs and decide to skip the shower, she had climbed back in bed and was sleeping soundly.
