The Office of the Constable
The Constable - A Thousand Year History
The position of Constable is thought to be the  oldest law enforcement office in the Western World, dating before the fifth century in Europe.   The Constable's first official designation was made in the Magna Carta in 1215 A.D., which expanded the Constable's law enforcement duties.  Established over 170 years ago, Constables comprised the very first police force in Texas.  The Texas Constable today has broad law enforcement authority, to include civil process for the assigned justice court and a wide range of criminal law enforcement responsibilities.  Constables are commissioned by the Governor as law enforcement agencies just as any county sheriff's department or municipal police department.
