The purpose of this protocol is to provide members of the Elkhorn Fire-Rescue Explorer Post a uniform procedure of training requirements and advancement within the post. Its intent is to structure an Explorers training according to prior instruction and different degrees of difficulty as an Explorer matures in the program. The Elkhorn post will operate under a Level program, in which there will be three divisions. These divisions will be covered in depth. Explorer training utilizes classroom environment instruction, as well as hands on practical experience. Explorers who have not completed any certifications, or passed tests for Level One will be considered Explorer Candidate until such time as they pass Level One Certification. The first division, called Level One, is entry level Explorers. Their main goals and objectives are to become familiar with the fire and EMS services, their terminology, and basic equipment identification. It will take about eight to twelve hours of instruction to become certified Level One Explorers. The next division, Level Two Explorer, takes about 25-30 hours of additional instruction. This level gives Explorers the basic working knowledge of the Fire/EMS services, its equipment, standards and protocols. Instruction for Explorers at this level also includes more in depth classroom and hands-on instruction. An Explorer at this level will be the equivalent of a Firefighter I and EMS First Responder. The last division, Level Three, takes about 45-60 hours of additional instruction. Level Three Explorers are advanced, showing a great deal of working knowledge of Level One and Two materials, and specialized instruction in Fire/EMS operations such as forcible entry, ventilation and as well as other areas. An Explorer who attains this level will have the equivalent knowledge of a Firefighter II and EMT-B. Explorers who show the desire to attain this level, usually go onto becoming a firefighter/EMT and rank highly in their class studies. The following pages are the Levels and their requirements, as well as what Explorers will not do. The Advisors have the right to alter the training program as they see fit. HOWEVER: Explorers must complete all requirements before they are promoted. The Lead Advisor is responsible for keeping track of the Explorers advancements and training.
