A Woman of Distinction
RECOGNITION OF A WOMAN IN SPORT/ADMINISTRATOR
AND A MENTOR FOR WOMEN IN SPORT
I have always championed women’s issues and individual efforts: especially, in those cases where the achieving women did so in fields formerly reserved exclusively for men. So, it is with pleasure and pride that I bring the accomplishments of Lorraine Muringi to the attention of other women. She has succeeded in penetrating all facets of boxing administration in what was once the all-male boxing fraternity in an environment where women are still campaigning for equal rights.
Two other aspects of Lorraine’s entry into the world of boxing are worth noting; namely, that she achieved her success while raising four children and that she always managed to sustain the support and encouragement of her husband, Robson Muringi. Furthermore, she did all of this in her adopted society of Zimbabwe. As a consequence, both African-Americans and Zimbabweans claim her as their Lorraine Muringi.
