Luke Chapters 1 and 2

Zacharias and Elisabeth, the father and mother of John and the uncle and aunt of Jesus, were given a child by God even though they were old in age.  Even before the ascension of Christ, the Holy Spirit co-existed with the Son and even was present on earth before the arrival of Christ.  "For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neitherr wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb" (Lk 1:15).  The majestic power of God's sovereignty is shown as we see His plan supernaturally unfolding.  Six months after John is conceived in the womb of Elisabeth, Gabriel is sent to Mary.  As Mary was a virgin, the Holy Spirit also descended upon Mary, "And the angel answered and said unto her, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:  therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God" (Lk 1:35).  "And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the saluation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:" (Lk 1:41).  "And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost and prophesied" (Lk 1:67).  What an honor for this extended family to be chosen by God, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and to be the vessel in which God would complete and accomplish the greatest deed for humanity.  The clear predetermined path of God on earth was exemplified when he was just twelve discussing with the doctors in Jerusalem and his parents serached to find him to who, when they did, replied, "How is it that ye sought me?  Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" (Lk 2:49).  John was conceived and created "to give light to them that sit in darkeness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace" (Lk 1:79).  He was fashioned and led by the Holy Ghost to prepare the way of the Lord.  John, since birth was a servant to another man his own age, Jesus, as his duty was set when created by God.  The Lord having prepared himself an entrance through John, already began to show wonders at a young age.
