Elfu Bob

Projects >>

The criteria for the project selection are:
(1) It should be Kenyan;
(2) It does not have any major donors already in place;
(3) It is sustainable; and preferably
(4) There is a personal connection with the project so as to ensure that funds are used appropriately and that there is easy follow-up.

Appropriate projects are discussed each month. The decision making process is open to all members who wish to take part.

Some of our recent activities since August 2003 include:

January 2004: The January project was the Jeck Community Project, which is in Kibera. Someof you may have gone out with us late last year to visit the project (this was organised by Laurent Granier). Their initial vision for Elfu Bob assistance did not really fit within the mandate of Elfu Bob (very fluid but definitely there!), but they have since revised their request, and now would like Elfu Bob to buy furniture for their school, as well as supplies to rebuild a wall of the school (which collapsed with the rains about a week after we visited).

December project: "Seeds of Peace" is a local organisation that runs peace camps for Nairobi's street kids. 70 kids attended the December camp. Some Elfu Bobsters went out and did a huge shop for the camp - all money went to meals and other necessities.

November project: Spirit of Faith Centre. An orphanage with 130 children, they are trying to become less dependent on private donations and develop money-generating activities. Elfu Bob helped buy the Centre a cow and cover upkeep costs. The cow (one of four they plan to buy) will supply milk for the kids, and surplus milk will be sold to generate money for the Centre. October project: Two hospital beds and a medication cupboard, as well as a water tank and some plumbing equipment were delivered to the Ewaso Rongai school (near Turkana)

August project: A group of about a dozen Elfu Bobsters headed out to the Ruiru Rehabilitation Centre to install equipment funded and bought by members. We spent a full day and got EVERYTHING done: rain gutters/water tanks installed on two buildings; a number of buildings painted; compost heap started; clothesline installed; new cover for the well; trees planted around the garden. All kids were incredibly enthusiastic to help with everything, and were absolutely instrumental in getting all tasks done!

Adam provided the inspiration for the "Elfu Bob Club" in Kenya. Financial reports are distributed to members and records of spending and correspondence are available upon request.

Elfu Bob membership has surpassed 60 people in Nairobi and is growing every month!

Future projects:

We have a couple of projects in the pipeline, but we think it would be good if we could get more proposals that

(a) have an environmental element within them; and/or
(b) might involve Elfu Bobster labour! The Ruiru trip was a success and we have had a multitude of requests for more direct involvement. So send them on in!!
