CH 1 Key Concepts
Stress is something interfering with your life.
Stressors are things that cause stress and adversely impact your life.
Flight or fight stress response means fight or run from real or perceived threats. 3 parts: LT projects such as growth, healing shut down in favor of survival.
Nocebo effect, too much information. Example: 1st year med studentsreceive and read suggestions of stress, plus lack of sleep, conditions of disease.
Vitamin supplements - regulated etc. US movement to control your own health
Eustress is called "good" stress like when joyful events happen like getting an A in this course.
Neustress is something not directly related to you, like a disaster far away.
Chronic stress is an ongoing situation.
Acute stress is a sharp pain that ends after a short time, one-time event
Distress is often abbreviated as stress either acute or chronic.
Psychological and social stressors include relocation, social events like weddings, overcrowding, major life changes
Allostasis Allostatic load, damage to body e g heart. Too much stress, out of balance, constant stress, no chance to slow down.
The stress response is known as the fight or flight response. Its 4 stages are stimuli, decipher as either threat or nonthreat, activation if needed, return to steady state when it's over. Example that scream came from the TV
Selye's 3-stage general adaption syndrome occurs in 3 stages: 1. Alarm reaction, fight or flight. 2. Resistance, body tries to return to equilibrium by resisting the alarm as if it's not there. 3. Exhaustion, when you can't carry the alarm load any more and often die as a result.
Wellness paradigm is Einstein's theory that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. 4 components Physical. Emotional, Spiritual, Mental.
COMMENTS Physical arousal as a stone age survival mechanism. This mechanism is still relevant today. When you see a car coming you get out of its way or get run over. You look both ways before crossing a street, and cross busy streets by traffic signals. Without this vital survival mechanism I wouldn't be here today writing this.
Bioecological stress. Noise pollution e g traffic noise is stress and causes hearing loss. Too much noise at home or work e g loud radio or TV is also stress.

Most doctor visits are about stress-induced illness. Word originates as a physics term. Hans Selye applied the word to human condition. Social influence also includes major life changes e g weddings, jobs, children.
Animals ST < 30 sec 50X/Day 5 sec each, humans, primates, baboons) worry antricipatory angst turns on stress by thinking, chronic mobilizing of energy, increase blood pressure over and over producing illness. LT - not in moment - healing, digestion, growth, reproduction, dominance [males] Survival of fittest (pass on genes to new generation)
Paradigm - model to view life. Wellness vs holistic. Medical considers physical issues only. Wellness' opposite is disease or illness, medical is repair or replace parts.
Rene Descartes said "I think, therefore I am." a k a dualisic thought, body vs mind / emotions. Spiritual is used to mean beyond self e g validation.
General adaptation syndrome. Alarm, alert; body fights back, generalize, bigger picture, calm vs stress reduction; weaken, exhaustion, can't return to homeostasis (even balance)
NOTE Ulcers are caused by a virus.
CH 15 Key Concepts
Social engineering is a cognitive strategy of working around stressors you can't remove from your life. Most any stressor encountered outside of custody can be removed. Time management is part of social engineering.
Procrastination means putting off things which must be done such as diversion, distraction, avoidance of hard or unpleasant chores. This keeps things from getting done and makes unavoidable things worse.
Steps to initiate time management include prioritization, scheduling and execution. Setting priorities is part of it.
Pareto principle: 20% of things we do give 80% of reward or satisfaction.
ABC rank ordering method is A - must do B - should do C - could do. This is part of setting priorities.
Time mapping breaks the day into small time blocks for shorter chores e g mailing letters. Boxing is setting large dayparts aside for projects and allows for inevitable unavoidable interruptions.
Important vs urgent method means importance vs urgency. Decide which things are most urgent include getting homework done and ready to turn in on time.
Preparing for stress is a good defense. Time management comes in handy here.
Every year 84,129 nurses get a physical & survey. 14 years later 1100 of them had heart disease. Healthy, disease-free people exercise 1/2 hour a day, NS, ate fiber & fruit daily, 1 glass of wine a day, normal weight control.

Doing homework ahead when possible helps if anything happens I'm not behind.
Workaholism. I thought it was mostly Silicon Valley's dominant culture is work but according to this book it's true everywhere.

Time robbers include type A behavior, time juggling, workaholism, perfectionism, procrastination (straightforward - going to a movie instead of studying for an exam; deceptive - starting but drifting away; time trap - doing easier things first like walking the dog, not leaving enough time for homework or term papers), lifestyle behavior (saying yes to every request)
All my life I've always been tired and always will be tired. I've learned to live with it. I spend all my time asleep. >I have no energy I see this as an unsolvable given I must live with and just leave it at that.

CH 14 Key Concepts
Nonverbal communication means gestures and other body language which can be more revealing than verbal language while not involving actual words. It can also include space and clothes.
Conversational styles include words used to solve conflicts. This can be regional or create misinterpretations of a spoken message.
Listening skills mean comprehending what's said.
Attending skills attending is keeping from tiring.
Responding skills mean how to respond to what's said.
Conflict resolution is about content conflict or factual conflict; values conflict or conflict involving opposing values; and ego conflict, or "power plays".
Conflict management styles include withdrawal, or opting out; surrender to "keep the peace"; or hostile aggession, browbeating somebody to get your way.
Steps to enhance communication skills include articulation, vocabulary, language. Avoid asking others to relay your message, putting good people on the defensive (crummy ones don't count) Attack issues, not people. Avoid information overload. Validate your statements. Resolve problems ASAP.
COMMENTS
I decide who I communicate or dialogue with. The rest I don't care about. Real friends are those you don't have to negotiate with or bother with issues, just enjoy them when they're around and not busy.

CHS 17, 18 Key Concepts
Belly breathing is another word for diaphragmatic breathing. It involves breathing through your tummy, which children are conditioned out of.
Pranayama is a yoga term for belly breathing. An example is Lamaze childbirth breathing.
Diapragmatic breathing is from your tummy instead of your chest. It's healthier and provides more room to take in air.
Alternate nostril breathing is when nostrils take turns taking in air. Each nostril alternates after several hours. It's not noticeable.
Meditation is an Eastern method of self-reflection thousands of years old. We in the West are more skeptical.
INCLUSIVE MEDITATION is also referred to as access meditation, insightful meditation and mindfulness. Thoughts are allowed to wander in and out similar to free association. Relax, delete muscular tension, avoid sleep positions.
The relaxation response consists of 4 steps: quiet environment, mental device to replace thoughts, passive (receptive) attitude, comfortable position. It is used to promote physical relaxation.
Example: Zen. Abandon dualities e g good vs bad, light vs dark, as separating oneself from the universe. Pure Zen thought is without judgement.
Koan is an unaswerable question. There's lots of them out there & I get the point for 2 sentences instead of 1.
Mindfulness is like free association. Your mind wanders aimlessly.
EXCLUSIVE MEDITATION mind closed against visual distractions.
Mental reprepetition, produce a thought over and over. Sounds (audible energy, 1-syllable mantras) are said to heal.
Visual concentration stare fascinated at an bject, Tratak,
Physical repetition breathing, aerobic exercise e g running, swimming, walking.
Tactile repetition, Hold a small object
Meditation position, back straight and legs folded.
TRANSENDENTAL MEDITATION (TM) focus on a mantra, a single word.
ALTERED STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS Different brain waves than normal consciousness or sleep. Significant decrease in sensory input. Daydreaming is an alternate consciousness pattern. Such alrernate states also include time distortion, ineffability (an experience you can't describe), present-centeredness (normal consciousness between past, present, future) perception distortion, enhanced receptivity (ego walls temporarily lowered and subcosncious thoughts enter your mind freely)
Detached observation, the world is one big movie.
Hyperaggressiveness, free-floating hostility. Type A will step on anybody who gets in their way.

Diaphragmatic breathing slows down & relax. Less tense, more oxygen in, lower blood pressure.

CH 4 Key Concepts
Sigmund Freud is still the main reference point for mostly all psychology theories and terms. Freud established human behavior's groundwork in studies.
defense mechanisms are in place to protect the ego from harm. They include denial, repression, projection, rationalization, displacement, and humor.
Carl Jung of Switzerland was hand picked to take up where Freud left off. His theories were likened to an iceberg: its tip was the conscious, below the surface was subconscious, below that was the collective unconscious.
Individuation is about self-discovery and realization. It recalls childhood experience anbd spirituality, gave the ability to think over life's issues and purpose. Process of self-discovery & personality. Dreams, anger; conscious & unconscious clash if not individuated; integrate dark unconscious & light conscious, dreams, freudian slips, hidden flaws.
Most stressful is keeping up the act e g gays not dare to come out.
Dream interpretatiojn is different for ea person, not universal e g dream dictionaries. Avg IQ = 100
Collective unconscious, thought's reservior, passes ancient wisdom from generation to generation. It also passes along culture and dreams.
Psychic equilibrium describes the balance between thought and health. It travels between the conscious and subconscious by making the conscious become multilingual to accommodate the subconscious.
Active imagination involves lucid dreaming to solve problems. Unwanted dream situations are also ended, resolved, by this form of visualization.
Jung believed people are wired at birth. Research on personality. Myers & Briggs mother & daughter (daughter at college married Briggs, hence research to build test) BOOK Pleae Understand Me Kiersey & Bates
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross 1926 - 2004, Swiss. Obsessed with the stages of death. She studied and counseled terminally ill cancer patients. Based on clinical experience.
Stages of psychological grieving include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. This theory is also used on regard to death of unmet expectations. Go through each like with a loss. Depression is reactive, preparing to move into acceptance.
Viktor Frankl MD 1905 - 1997 Surviving 3 years at Auschwitz & other labor camps (instead of straight to a death camp) Frankl noticed only those whose life had meaning survived. The rest died.
Logotherapy is Frankl's description of finding life's meaning. It also involves attitude during stressful situations.
Tragic optimism is Frankl's description of finding purpose in any condition of life. A positive perspective of life's events is expected to be gained.
Studied fellow inmates, kept diary. Will to meaning, nooda dynamics. Most labor deaths are due to disease. His goal: Work as investigator, survive to tell the story why some live or die. Freud looks to the past. Frankl loos to future. Despair = hope to future. Link between disease & optimism. Positive explanatory style survive hardship better. Be wary of self-referential instead of studying others.
Most powerful torture is to destroy sense of future & identity, make them dependent on you.
COMMENTS
Self-imposed guilt. I serve God and country by making stupid people feel guilty and stupid because they are guilty and stupid. I put stress onto them & rightly so. Do it to them instead. I come up with great stuff to lay on them while I work to get them fired. I question authority.
True they can force you, they're given authority to, but NEVER allow jerks to obligate you. Remember you don't owe them. What they can't force you to do, don't do. God hates them and won't accept them into Heaven. Why should we put up with them?
Suffering. I see no real value except the ability to understand stuff and develop a decent person's philosophy instead of less. Dreams. I believe dreams can & do solve problems is why "sleep on it" assuming your dreams are at all worthwhile.
ASSIGNMENT
Carl Jung was right about dreams being useful but most of my non-problem solving dreams are nothing but nightmares. I'm grown but I still have nightmares. I reckon I always will. One I really remember, a good one I had about 10 or 12 years ago, which led me to go ahead and get into theater.
Death of significant expectation. What expectations? In this town it's all punishment & no parts, publishers or even pollworking. I co8uld move tomorrow & it's still the same. I'm always picked on, bullied,singled out and punished. Of course I resent it. Do it to them instead. It makes life not worthwhile. Others are treated better. They don't have to toe the line. They got friends and defenders I go through life without.
Anger or fear based. As I said earlier my problems are all external. I'm not the introspective type. I won't feel guilty over piss-ant shit. Make them feel guilty instead. Anger at being picked on & punished, fear they'll finally put me away or kill me outright. Do it to them instead, I give a shit? As long as I'm not blamed.
ASSIGNMENT psychologist most helpful, why? Viktor Frankl is the one I most identify with. Being as my problems are all exernal, most helpful to me are people who can and will deal in my favor. I'm tired of hearing those who punish defended while I'm forced to face the music alone. I find therapy useless and forced because the problem is still there and not removed. Nothing is solved in my favor. So-called doctors who sit like lumps and then push dope I find offensive. I find a religious approach equally offensive and worse than useless. I won't buy into a get-tough (asshole) ethic either.
CH 5 Key Concepts
rage reflex Anger is crucial for survival. It's common to all animals.
gender differences Society condones angry men. They're encouraged to show anger to get what they want. Women are expected to "play by the rules" and listen to empty promises and men aren't.
physiological responses of anger Anger releases more norepinephrine into your blood. Most physiological responses to anger and fear are similar but a few are different.
myth of catharsis Freud's term Catharsis meant purification, emptying emotiional reservoirs. Randomly released anger is not productive because it only gets you in trouble. The problem is still there.
anger management styles Somatizers only show passive feelings, which are unhealthy. Self-punishers let stupid people obligate them, buying whatgever bill of goods they're being sold, and take them on guilt trips. Exploders erupt at people or objects unrelated to the situation producing anger, like volcanoes, the stereotype of uncontrolled anger. Underhanders unlike exploders target the source rather than random passersby, in what they perceive as socially acceptable ways. Underhanders see themselves as victims. Resolution is rarely accomplished.
creative anger strategies 1. Know your anger mgt style. 2. Keep a journal. 3. Deescalate. 4. Outthink. 5. Get comfortable and express anger by constructive means. 6. Plan ahead and avoid such situations or people. 7. Support system if it's an option. 8. realistic expectaions of self, others 9. problem-solving, not paint yourself into a corner 10. exercise; stay in shape 11. request instead of complain 12. Let past anger pass.

systematic desensitization Start small then expand toward face to face confrontation, like standing on a chair.
Depression is continual sadness and grief. Symptoms include loss of appetite and interest in anything, fatigue, hopelessness and inability to concentrate or remember things.
Psychosomatic illness is imagined illness. It's seen as a persistent illness that isn't there.

FEAR I get more sympathy from police than those who call them on me and play them for fools. If that's true why do they come running like puppies "checking it out" and "hearing both sides of the story"? I know police tie their shoelaces like we do. Of course I question them if I'm caught. They can make up anything they want and it sticks. Innoculate your lawyer and if possible the judge. Police ask me where I live I tell them it's private information. When people can find me that's when my problems begin.
Of course you's be angry too if you were punished. Who cares what the story is. The bottom line is I resent being put upon and I complain.
ASSIGNMENT handling anger I handle anger by finding who to comlain to about its source, sympathetic people who can and will deal in my favor. The last asshole who tried to sell me a behavior problem lost his job. Good riddance. I'm punished, they stop working there, I'm not punished any more.
CH 6 Key Concepts
Type A behavior, rushed & hurried, is thought since Eisenhower and Kennedy to cause heart attacks. This discovery was stumbled on when waiting patients sat on the edge of their chairs while office furniture was reupholstered. The hurried sickness to which assessment questionnaires were immediately given. Hostility and Type A are closely related to heart attacks or strokes. There seems no remedy for such a situation.
Social influences on Type A include material wealth, instant gratification, competition, numbers, TV watching. These and other factors make Type A part of our culture.
Codependency is making other people dependent on you. They take on 5 things but I only take on 3 or less, mostly less. Codependency also means playing along with somebody else's drinking, drugs or other problems.
Enablers cover up for addictive people, make excuses for them, focus solely on them. Many of their character traits are similar to those of addicts.
Process addiction is behavior used for personal validation and approval about other people's problems. Like, who needs it?
Codependence traits include approval-seeking, perfectionism, overreaction, crisis managing, devotion, self-sacrifice, being a victim, feeling inadequate.
Locus of control refers to internal or external control of your life. External control, like luck or weather, associates with stress-proneness or helpless-hopelsssness.
The hardy personality resists stress. Hardy people feel less stress.
Sensation seekers constantly seek thrills and risk most people avoid. It's not really worth it to non-risk takers.
Self esteem refers to how well you think of yourself.
COMMENTS
Work pays the bills unless work expenses are greater. It's also necessary to study for finals. I like to swim & sooner be on the swim team than serve as captain. Big sisters is another responsiblibty leaving you less time for sleep.
Too many projects is not healthy or worthwhile.

I went to the site, interested only in those free and public, not require registration. I took other tests but at this time couldn't locate those mentioned in the assignment. I drew average or below average scores.
NOTES Sleep deprivation. Today we get 1 1/2 hrs < sleep than 100 years ago. 1 / 10 serious sleep loss --> car accidents especially after 24 hours after spring & fall time change. Insomnia, < 6 - 7 hrs a night, > death rates (shorter life span) heart, lung, kidney, immune diseases. Insomnia > 40x / year, clinical depression. Asthma, substance use, smoking, caffeine, lack of exercise. Awareness = refreshed. Rule out medical problems. Quiet hr before HS.
PERSONALITY class notes What is a personality? How do we get them?
Personality vs stress react different ways e g Type A, even in same families even identical twins, different life experience. Symptoms worse during stress. Type A is mostly hostility. Nature - genetics. Nurture - environment: training, siblings & peers, parents & other significant adult figures. Twins separated at birth, reunited 30 - 40 years later: 70% of their characteristics are similar.

CH 8 Key Concepts
Cognitive restructuring is used to cope with stress-related ailments. It's intended to turn internal thoughts into positive ones.
Toxic thoughts are those negative perceptions result from low self-esteem. They come from a life of nothing but persecution and punishment.
Self talk is designed to condition belief in any bill of goods you're sold.
Self fulfilling prophecy means you build a baseball park & people will come.
Steps in cognitive restructuring include awareness, identifying of stressors, reappraising the situation (second opinion) restructuring factors involved, adoption and substitution (new mindset) evaluation of effectiveness.
Awfulizing is a preponderance of negative thoughts. It leads to a shallow, one-track existence. There's nothing but worst-case scenarios.
Cognitive distortion means magnifying perceptions out of proportion. If it looks bigger, it is.
Magnifying
Perfectionism means doing everything just so. You wear yourself out for nothing.
Rational emotive therapy means (Albert Ellis, 1962) stress-related behaviors start with perceptions. Ellis says these perceptions can be changed.
Serenity prayer: God give me the good fortune to run into prople I like, the senility to avoid those I don't like and the eyesight to know the difference.
Should-ing means regrets for what you should of done but didn't. It's just hindsight.
Reframing means seeing the situation from a different view. It means seeing other people's views even if they are all lies.
Catastrophizing means always preparing for worst-case scenarios because that's all there is.
COMMENTS
Why should Lucy settle for a substandard environment? Like a substandard relationship. Why tolerate drugs and crime? If you don't like your life, pack a suitcase & catch a bus even if you have children. How can anyone be cheerful about an inferior environment in this day and age? In this country? Arnold Schwarzenegger flew across the Atlantic Ocean and arrived here with $20 and his suitcase and now he's rich. Others arriving here penniless are now homeowners.
As a child I hated my whole life and everyone in it. My only good years where those in which I got to go horsebackriding at least once. I've since lost all interest. I step out of the way so police horses can pass by & not run me over I'm still hollered at. Horses then were good, generous, decent and likeable. Horses nowadays aren't. The only good people were and are those who don't boss, lecture, tattle or punish.
ASSIGNMENT Personal value of cognitive restructuring
I don't want to hear a new philosophy. I'm not interested. Just tell me who to complain to who can and will deal in my favor. Anything else is irrelevant. I'm still put upon and still resent it. I reduce stress by removing the source. Why allow it to remain in your life?
I find no value in cognitive restructuring. I ask somebody a valid question. Instead of getting a real answer like other people do I'm bossed, lectured and punished. Is that all there is? Saying "I don't want to hear that" & repeating my question only gets me more of the same or worse. I give up and grab what I want and walk away, ignoring their hollering. Why listen to what I don't like?
Test anxiety emotionality (gut feeling) worry, take up needed shelf space. Typical physical symptoms. Not learning disability? Unrelenting standards schema. Expectations too high. Unrelenting stress (US) schema attack, overly worried passsed on through generations, parents withhold love for children not performing. Pareto - lowest 10% laid off, top 10% promoted, become execs. Values from workplace.

CH 9 Key Concepts
Aggressive behavior style is a hostile attitude. It gets you in trouble and makes enemies.
Assertiveness is standing up for our rights. If you don't, no one else will. Be nobody's fool. Don't be pushed around.
Classical conditioning - stimulus produces response through association as with Pavlov's dogs.
Operant conditioning - behavior affected by redirectiong thought processes.
Awareness Behavior modification model is used to initiate behavior change. Last asshole who tried to sell me a behavior problem lost his job.
Modeling is copying the behavior of an attractive person. Role models can be parents or other figures in your life or public figures on TV. I never saw anyone that attractive. Cultural deprivation? My values are not like theirs.
Passive behavior style You're too intimidated to fight for your rights. You forfeit them tamely and let assholes walk all over you.
COMMENTS
I'm tired of being told to consider the feelings of jerks. Why should I? They're what other people complain about. They're garbage. I'd gladly attack them to get rid of them. All the good people are driven away or turned into what bad ones are or both. EXAMPLE St James post office keeps dumping their stupidest people on us. I complained until this post office was reamed out. My post office box is there. Besides I got no pity for That kind. Businesses where service is poor soon go out of business. Good riddance.
It's imperative to get people elected I can complain to when I need help and not just get lectured. I walk precincts and I vote.

CH 13 Key Concepts
Creative obstacles describe inability to access creativity.
Creative problem solving steps: Identify the problem, Generate, select and refine ideas, implement and evaluate ideas.
Cultural roadblocks mean language is perceived incorrectly. You're seldom aware of it.
Emotional roadblocks mean fear of making mistakes, fear of the unknown, fear of rejection, fear that others will discover your past mistakes. Often these very people are the ones who can adversely impact you.
Intellectual roadblocks arise from lack of understanding or knowledge of other cultures. People who study diversity are better equipped to cope.
Perceptual roadblocks are inability to separate yourself from the problem. Cognitive overrules creativity.

ASSIGNMENT Creative problemsolving exercises at end of chapter & what you learned from them. I find them difficult because there's not much information even for an advice column. It feels hypothetical. Problem 3 I'm long familiar with. Prepare for homelessness. If you own your house, if you're a man you can live in your car if you have one or else live in the garage and rent your house out. This should provide you with money for expenses. Otherwise, prepare for impending homelessness. It's always harder for women.
CH 26 Key Concepts
Binary biofeedback equipment tells you only if you control one physiological function or other. Proportional biofeedback also shows amount of change.
EKG biofeedback cardiovascular measures heart rate and blood pressure. It's mostly used by athletes and people at risk for heart disease.
EDR biofeedback electrodermal is also called GSR (Galvanic Skin Response) Attached to fingers because water (sweat) conducts electicity it mostly detects nervousness. It's the same technology used in polygraph tests.
EMG biofeedback electromyographic reads electrical impulses from muscles. An electrode is placed on a gaven muscle prone to tension: lower back, jaw, shoulder, neck.
Thermal biofeedback measures temperature generated by blood flow. It's mostly for headaches and Raynaud's disease (hands and feet are too cold)
COMMENTS
High blood pressure results from a lifestyle however involuntary of all stress and few or no highlights. At least knock wood I'm out of custody and no longer bounced around. I got room and board paid for at least until I'm 65.
I can well appreciate & treasure what few breaks I get in the routine. I take high blood pressure for granted. I'm a firm believer in chicken noodle soup. I keep it handy in my house (I buy it on sale) to stave off headaches. Carrots & potatoes are also good in this purpose.
