Speeches
This is a collection of various speeches made in the Lord of the Rings books and movies. We have picked them out because they had a certain impact on the way we thhought o believed, or because they were just too cool to pass up. Each speech states who made it, who they were talking to, and where it's from. Enjoy!! NOTE: Now this page has been expanded to offer quotes from our lives as well. If you'd ike to submit one to us, email Elf Girl here with your name, site address, email address, and quote. Any other things you'd like to say about Mirkwood are welcome, too.
Lord of the Rings Quotes.
Sam: "It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. ful of darkness and danger they were.
And sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to
the way it was, when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness
must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that
stayed with you, that meant something. EWven if you were too small to understand why. But i think, Mr. Frodo, I do
understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chance of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going,
because they were holding onto something."
Frodo: "What are we holding on to, Sam?"
Sam: "That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for."
- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Movie version. (Scene: "The stories that really mattered") Sam
talks to Frodo about the quest, and how it's like the stories they grew up with. He tells Frodo that they can't give
up the qeust to destroy the Ring because there's something that they are fighting for, and that if they give up, the
world will never be the same. This could also mean that the entire population of Middle-earth is depending on them,
fighting to ensure they can accomplish the quest, and dying for thier cause. Basically, it's a very long way of saying
"If we give up, the world as we know it is gone forever." As easy as it would have been for Sam to say that, I prefer the
speech, because it sounds better and maked the movie last a little longer. <^_^>
Legolas: "Final count; 42."
Gimli: "42? Not bad for a pointy-eared Elvish princeling. I myself am sitting pretty on 43."
((Legolas takes out his bow and arrow and shoots theOrc Gimli is sitting on.))
Legolas: 43.
Gimli: He was already dead!
Legolas: He was twitching!
Gimli: He was twitching, because he's got MY AX embedded in his nervous system!
((Gimli shakes his ax, which is in the Orc's neck, and the Orc twitches uncomtrollably.))
- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers; Extended version. (Scene: "The Final Tally".) This, as we all know if we've read the books or seen the movie, is the conclusion of the Orc-killing contest between Gimli and Legolas. In the book, Legolas admits defeat, after Gimli killed one more Orc. And if you're wondering how Legolas lost if he had a head start in the movie, it's because they make it seem like he has an inexhaustable amount of arrows, when he really has to go find more every once and awhile in the book.
Aragorn: Sons of Gondor, of Rohan. My brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me! A day may come, when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of Fellowship, but it is not this day! An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you, stand, men of the West!
- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: Original release. (Scene: In the sript that I found, it's called "The Black Gate opens and the Wheel of Fire") This is a rather inspirational quote, I think. Aragorn is, of course, persuading the armies of Rohan and Gondor to fight the orcs and men that come out of the Black Gate while they are diverting Sauron's attension from Frodo and Sam. I personally think this line would have been better only if it didn't sound like Viggo had a head cold while he was saying it, since it did sound kind of nasal. <^_^>
Gimli: Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an elf.
Legolas: What about side by side with a friend?
Gimli: Aye, I could do that.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, original release. (Scene: "The Black Gate Opens and the Wheel of Fire") A cute sort of conversation between Gimli and Legolas. What Legolas says definately confirms that the two have become good friends, dispite what their races think of each other. I always think of those two as sort of a Romeo and Juliet, only they're not in love, they are both male, and neither die at the end. However, the whole becoming friends while their races hate each other thing is what I;'m comparing. <^_^> ...Yeah...
Gimli: There's plenty for the both of us. May the best dwarf win!
- The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King, original release. (Scene: "I Am No Man") You havbe to love Gimli. In this, he's talking to Legolas as they surprise the Orcs at the Osgiliath Harbor. This is te beginning of the second Orc-killing contest, but this time, they don't say wo won. Maybe they will in the extended version, though. <^_^>
Aragorn: My friends! You bow to no one!
[With this, Aragorn kneels before the hobbits and bows his head. The rest of the crowd soon follows their King and the hobbits watch, astonished, as all the people pay homage to them.]
Frodo VO: And thus it was...The fourth age of Middle-Earth began...And the Fellowship of the Ring, though eternally bound by friendship and love, was ended.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Original release. (Scene: The Return of the King") Just after Aragorn's corronation and marriage to Arwen, the crowd bows to the King and Queen, as do the hobbits. Aragorn sees them, and then this happens. I wanted to add the Frodo line, only because it fits well. This is a part in the movie where I almost cried, because it's so sweet. However, it's the part at the Grey Havens that gets me. Anyway, it's a sweet quote, and I love it a lot. I SO can't wait for the extended version of RotK!!
Pippin: Home is behind, the world ahead... And there are many paths to tread... Through shadow, to the edge of night. Until the stars are all alight. Mist and shadow, cloud and shade... All shall fade...All shall fade.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Original Release (Scene: All Shall Fade") This is the song that is sung by Billy Bod in the movie. He sings it to Denethor, while the War of the Ring rages on in other parts of Middle-earth. The way he sings it, this scene almost makes it seem like Pippin knew what was really oing on, even though he had no way of knowing that faramir would be hurt, or that Aragorn and his group were preparing for battle. I didn't really notice this, until my dear friend Candi pointed it out to me. Thanks, Candi!
Aragorn: This day does not belong to one man...but to all. Let us together re-build this world...that we may share in the days of peace.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, original release. (Scene: "The Return of the King") This is what Aragorn states just after he is crowned King of Gondor. It's a cute sort of quote, and also a bit inspirational. And you just have to love the way Viggo Mortensen can add so much dynamic to a line like this with just his voice, and that fact that he looks really hot in this scene, even though I personally think he looks better with the straggley hair. <^_^>.
Aragorn: Et Erello Endorenna utlien...Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta! [Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.]
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, original release. (Scene: "The Return of the King") Like Billy Boyd, Viggo Mortensen gets to sing in Return of the King. He sings this song just after his corronation, and just before his marriage to Arwen. Thge translation after the quote pretty much sums it all up. <^_^>.
Frodo VO: How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on, when in your heart you begin to understand there is no going back. [We see Frodo, sitting in the study, writing into the Red Book.] There are some things that time can not mend. Some hurts that go too deep...that have taken hold.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, original release. (Scene: The Grey Havens). This quote actually goes back a little into the first quote on this page. They are both saying, how do you go back to your old life, when you have changed, but your life hasn't? I think that all of the members of the Fellowship thought this as they returned to their everyday lives. You can suffer great loss, hardship, and pain, and yet the l8ife you left behind shows none of it, until you return to it. And no matter how hard you try, nothing is ever the same again. At least, that's my interpretation of it. You can think what you will. <^_^>.
General Quotes
"Life is a long and winding road. No one can draw you a map down this road, and you have to walk your own path." - Elf Girl
I came up with this quote in 8th grade. I love this saying, and I use it almost every day. It's good advice, saying that you should walk your own way through life, and possibly even to walk to the beat of a different drum. Don't let anyone steer your sails but you (Okay, too much Romeo and juliet in English class! Stupid Mr. M!!!)
"Style isn't about what you wear.. It's about how you live." - Mr. Mannebach
This is a true quote from my 8th grade history teacher. He was a great inspiration to me, and to everyone else who had him as a history teacher. Poor Elijah Girl didn't have him, so she has no clue what I'm talking about. Anyway, this quote basically says live how you want to, and don't worry about material posessions. Your clothes may go out of date, but the way you live won't, unless you make it.
"Fall seven times, Stand up eight." - Japanese Proverb.
Okay, first off, anyone whos knows me should have seen this coming. Just the word Japanese hints that I love it. I love the Japanese culture. Anyways, I think this one means don't give up, no matter what you do. If you fail, try again. It's as simple as that.
"Smile whenever you can, because you never know when your town will be invaded by evil rapid monkeys, or you house will be squished by you favorite rubber duckie." - Chanda
This may be the only good thing that came from that.. nevermind. Not going to say it, since there may be children reading this. Anyway, Chanda used to be Elf Girl's friend, but then she found out that Chanda never liked her in the first place. Anyway, getting out of Elf Girl's private life, this quote means that you should smile whenever you can, because you never know what's going to happen to you in the future.
"Beware of Mini Tootsie Pops. They have an ingredient that should not be consumed by anyone!!!" - Elf Girl
Okay, i just came up with this one out of the blue. But seriously, Elijah Girl, Stephanie and I were eating these one day, and we were sure we'd been drugged, because we got REALLY hyper afterwards. I mean hyper for us, and if you've ever met Elijah Girl and me, my guess is that you ran away in fear for you life, right? So yeah, if you get Mini Tootsie Pops, BEWARE!!!
"Monkeys are cool." - Elf Girl.
Monkeys ARE cool! Ask anyone, and they'll say that monkeys are cool. Anyone who thinks monkeys are stupid is an idiot. After all, we evolved from monkeys. But for most people, that's not why they're cool. They just...are.
"In a New York Minute, everything can change." - The Eagles "New York Minute".
It's true. life can change in an instant. My dad heard this on the radio just after 9/11 and he had to pull over, because it seems like this song fit the occasion perfectly. Not only that, but the radio station added voice clips from that day into the song. LIve every moment as if it's your last.
((Sung to the Foldgers Coffee jingle.)) "The best part of waking up is going back to sleep." - Kat.
I agree. Coffee is nasty, and isn't it true that you just go through each day so you can go to sleep again at night? Sometimes it feels that way, at least.
"Life is a bubble I can pop at any time." - Galadriel.
Okay, some people might think this is a bit suicidal, but if you ever met this girl, you'd know that's she's crazy, so she really doens't mean it. Her best friend is a squirrel for crying out loud! Anyway, this is sorta true, because life can pop at any tie, whether you do it, or someone/thing else does.
"Everyone is a bomb with a different length of fuse. I happen to have a very short fuse, and you're playing with matches." - Elf Girl.
Too true. Everybody is a bomb that is ready to explode. So what this basically means is, if I'm in a bad mood, don't mess with me. That's it.
"Your heart is stronger than your head, but not your will." - Candi.
All I can say about this quote is that it's true. That's pretty much it.
More on the way!
