Men and Women join the Texas State Guard for many reasons; most participate out of a desire to make a meaningful contribution of service to their local community, State and Nation. Many members are individuals with prior military experience who miss the comradeship they gained from active duty. They enjoy being able to use and share the skills and knowledge they gained through previous training and experience.

From the Commanding General to the new recruit, the pay is the same. No funds are provided for regular drills, however Texas State Guard members may be compensated if called to active duty by the Governor for service during emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, or acts of terrorism.

HOW IS THE TEXAS STATE
GUARD ORGANIZED?

The Texas State Guard is organized along U.S. Army Brigade lines and conducts training similar to a Military Police organization. The Texas State Guard is capable of providing assistance to the civilian population in time of natural disasters. It assists law enforcement agencies in establishing law and order. The Texas State Guard also provides assistance to the families of mobilized Texas National Guard Troops, and conducts community service activities at the local and state level.

The Texas State Guard, with its Headquarters at Camp Mabry in Austin, is organized into six Brigades.  These Brigades can trace their lineage to original units of Texas Military Forces.

The 1st Brigade, known as the Alamo Guards, is located in San Antonio. The 2nd Brigade, known as the Austin Greys, is located in Austin. The 4th Brigade, known as Panther City Fencibles, is located Fort Worth. The 8th Brigade, known as Terry's Texas Rangers, is located in Houston. The 19th Brigade, known as Parson's Brigade, is located in Dallas. The 39th Brigade, known as Roughnecks, is located in Lubbock.
