Things to do:

Beaver Dam: Walk or drive to Via Kachess Road (.5 miles) and turn right onto it. Cross over a culvert in a few hundred feet and park on the left side of the road (if you drove). Enter the woods across the road through an overgrown trail entrance (old logging road). This is part of Tract B, which is community property owned by the Kachess Ridge Maintenance Association, and is, thus, open to residents and guests of the community. The trail veers to the right just 10 yards or so from the entry from the road. (An old trail continues straight, but it enters a private lot). You are basically skirting along the swamp known as Lodge Creek. In the past there have been beaver and the remains of a beaver dam can be seen. The trail meanders for a few hundred yards along the edge of the swamp, then ascends slightly to an old logging road that continues south, parallel to Lodge Creek and the Lake Kachess Road. After about a mile the trail intersects Lake Kachess Road (near the Cabin Creek Road). It is overgrown and swampy.

Beach Trail: Go north to the Lake Kachess Campground (as described above). Go past the booth and turn right at the "T". Park in the day use area and head for the beach. The trail can be difficult to follow at times, because there are many alternatives, but it doesn't really matter. Just follow the lake-front north towards Little Kachess Lake. You can, of course, access to the Lake via the Forest Service Campground. Turn right at Via Kachess road and go about .5 miles. The driveway is on the left and cuts back sharply north. A gate is there, but is usually not locked. The driveway is in good shape except for the last few hundred yards which are rather steep. Use your judgment, but I recommend walking it. There is a small parking lot before the steep section. The beach is rocky, not ideal for swimming, but a pleasant spot to sit and watch the lake.

Amabilis Mountain: For great cross-country skiing, take the Lake Kachess Road back towards I-90 about .5 miles to where the Cabin Creek Road intersects (road #4826). Ski the beautiful tracks set in the Cabin Creek Road about 1.5 miles until a road branches to the left and head up the slopes of Amabilis Mountain. Ski to the top (elev 4554) for great views in all directions. In the summer you can drive there.

Keechelus Ridge:
. Even though the cabin is in a development known as Kachess Ridge, it is actually situated at the southern base of Keechelus Ridge (Kachess Ridge is on the east side of Lake Kachess). You can walk/bicycle/ski/drive to some nice viewpoints by taking the Lake Kachess Road north towards the lake, past the Via Kachess intersection about .25 miles. Turn left onto Forest Service road #4936 (Thetis Creek) and ascend as far as you like.

Rachael Lake Trail: Go north toward the Lake Kachess Campground, and turn left at the booth (instead of entering the campground). Follow the road about 4 miles to the trailhead. The trail follows Box Canyon Creek up the valley for a few miles then climbs steeply up to the lake. Very popular late in the season. Go in May-June when it is snowbound and have the place to yourself. Upward from there to Rampart Ridge is a great excursion.

Swan Lake/Mt. Margaret:
Go as to Rachael Lake, but take a left turn a short distance after the campground intersection. You can drive all the way to Swan Lake (which is in the midst of a clear-cut now). A great scramble through the woods to the northwest will take you to Stonesthrow Lake and Margaret Lake (fairly easy, but no trail). From Margaret Lake take the trail to the ridge and follow it up to the summit of Mt. Margaret for great views.
