Story: Continuing from Sonic 3, Sonic has again stopped Dr Robotnik's Death Egg yet again. But the blast blew threw Sonic deep into the island's interior. Sonic goes after Knuckles because he's sure he knows something about the island's emeralds and especially the Master Emerald. Knuckles is after whoever through a bomb at him. But while those two are fighting each other, who's keeping an eye on Robotnik? If he gets his hands on the Master Emerald, bye bye freedom!

Sonic and Knuckles's cartridge was revolutionary, it had a special 'lock on' ability that meant you could open up the top of the cart and put in Sonic 3 to play through the full game 'Sonic 3 and Knuckles'. Other games could also be put in the top. If Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was put in you could play through the game as Knuckles with new areas unlocked. With Sonic the Hedgehog attached you could play infinite special stages from Sonic 3.
