Sunderland 0 Everton 1, Stadium Of Light, Saturday 24 August 2002
Everton's first away game of the season was a tricky looking match at the Stadium Of Light.

The Toffees had previously  made three visits to Sunderland's brilliant, modern stadium and three times had left with nothing to show for their efforts.

But all that was about to change.

Everton broke their Stadium Of Light hoodoo, winning 1-0 with a goal by Kevin Campbell. The goal came in the 27th minute when Thomas Gravesen's cross was headed back across the face of the goal by Tomasz Radzinski and the ball was swept in by Campbell.

The Black Cats were unlucky not scored on more than one occasion.

They struck the frame of Richard Wright's goal a couple of times, had a goal disalowed, and saw Wright brilliantly save a Kevin Philips penalty.
The Blues also had other chances, including the impressive Li Tie  testing Thomas Sorensen from long range three times before the break.

Sunderland were quite unlucky on the day, but fortune favoured the brave and Everton recorded their first win on Wearside for eighteen years.
