In 1971 the Governing Body was formally enlarged
to eleven
members. Thus making it clearly distinct from the board of directors of the
WTB&TS.
In 1974 the Governing Body was enlarged again to
eighteen members. Eighteen would be the largest number of members to sit on the
Governing Body at one time.
On January 1, 1976 the six
committees of the Governing Body went into operation assuming all the
authority that had been wielded by the Board of Directors of the WTB&TS
including its president. At that time all the activities of the WTB&TS came
under the direct oversight of the Governing Body. Jehovah had used certain faithful
brothers to take the lead as he gradually restored the Christian congregation
to its proper spiritual state. But now no longer would any one
man wield such authority, as the first three presidents of the WTB&TS
had, in directing the work of God's people on earth.

In the year 2000 the members of the
Governing Body who had been elected directors of various legal corporations
used by Jehovah's Witnesses resigned
from their respective positions in those corporations. Thus freeing up more
time for themselves to care for spiritual matters and providing nourishing
spiritual food for Jehovah's people.
