Cottage Witchery: Natural Magick for Hearth and Home
From
Publishers Weekly
According
to Dugan, a witch's cottage can take any shape, from a city
apartment to a house in the suburbs. A self-described "Garden
Witch" and psychic-clairvoyant, Dugan offers a Martha Stewart-like
guide for setting up a magickal home, helping readers to "reconnect
to the energies of the natural world", and "direct these magickal
forces ino (their) homes and everyday lives." A follow-up
to Garden Witchery, this guide will appeal to a broad
audience, from the serious witch hoping to align each room
with magickal principles, to the interested dabbler looking
for ways to draw magick into the kitchen or the newbie seeking
an alternative kind of feng shui. Included are a range of
interesting spells for "removing bad vibes", warding off unwanted
guests and buying and selling a home, as well as a household
journal with blessings for various rooms of the home, and
a helpful glossary of terms. Dugan is at her best when explaining
concepts like the history of different goddesses and categorizing
elements like the magickal qualities of houseplants. Though
Dugan claims often that this is a guide for any style of home
in any location, it will be most useful to readers with easy
access to nature.

Reading Ellen Dugan's COTTAGE WITCHERY reminds one that there
is a deep meaning in even the simplest items that our homes
and gardens contain--lemon, salt, tea, lilac, and sage, as
well as the many other things that fill our yards and gardens
and our cupboards and pantries. Ellen Dugan, using her commonsense,
no-nonsense approach that drew such acclaim in GARDEN WITCHERY,
opens the readers' eyes to the possibilities that are contained
in our own living spaces. Not many people take time to realize
just how magical their own houses and yards are, but you can
find the elements of any spell (protective or repellent) in
just about anyone's closet or front yard. By examining the
homey elements of the garden witch, Ms. Dugan endows the everyday
with a magical and mystical presence.
COTTAGE WITCHERY runs the gamut of home and garden based spells
from hedge witchery to kitchen magic. This is a great book
and a treat for anyone who loves their home, whether they
consider themselves magical or not. The essence of this book
is that there is magic in every home and every garden. Anything,
even the most mundane of objects, can make a home a safer
and happier place when wielded with love and affection. Ms.
Dugan encourages the reader to expand on their own experiences
and love the the natural world, and to experiment with their
own brand of magical energy.
Not only is COTTAGE WITCHERY brilliantly and entertaingly
written, it it also filled with fun and interesting facts,
potions, spells, and advice. I recommend it for any one who
loves gardening, arts and crafts, cooking, or metaphysics.
You don't have to have a magical bent to enjoy Ms. Dugan's
whimsical writing or the clever way she draws on the relationship
between heart and home. This is a great housewarming present!
Anyone who is interested in making their home a little warmer
should run out and get this book today! Much recommend--good
work Ms. Dugan!

From Tarot Reader Magazine
(June 2005) UK.
The last few years have seen a considerable growth in ‘Witchcraft
made simple’ books which are often beautifully presented,
but contain very little real information. Cottage Witchery
is both easy to understand and packed with practical advice,
information, spells and rituals. The Chapters cover Making
your Home Welcoming, Natural Magick, Kitchen Cupboard Magick,
Deities, Seasonal Decorations, Plants, Protection, Prosperity
and Happiness.
Clear and concise instructions are given for all the spells,
rituals and charms. Ellen usually starts by giving some helpful
background to each spell etc., followed by a list of items
needed, then a step-by-step guide to casting the spell. Most
of the items required are inexpensive and fairly easy to obtain.
Some chapters conclude with a few blank Household Journal
pages, where the reader can record their experiences and make
notes for future reference.
Ellen writes in a lively and informal style and, when relevant,
she includes interesting and amusing anecdotes about her own
and her family's experiences of Natural Magick. Overall, this
is an accessible, entertaining and informative book about
practical Natural Magick. I enjoyed reading it and I can thoroughly
recommend it.
