LIVING IN PAST GLORY?

Fellow Olivetians,

A CHALLENGE TO ALL

The Olivet of today is a shadow of the Olivet that most of you knew as students of the great institution. Academic excellence, first-rate study facilities, standard laboratories & workshops, well-equipped library, superb sports facilities and kits, discipline, good morals, dedicated teachers & upright students those were the hallmarks of Olivet in those days. Even the rascally ones were mostly above average in academics! Today it is a long tale of decadence in all facets.

Fellow Olivetians Our Olivet must not be allowed to die!

The structures, once resplendent, have become eyesores. The school fence, the gate, the classrooms, the hostel structures, the dining halls, the clinic, the Silver Jubilee Hall, the staff quarters, the JBP Lafinhan Library are all in deplorable condition; the roofs leak, the doors are broken, the windows are rickety, the louver blades are gone, while the walls are craving for repainting.

A flashback to the 60s, 70s and 80s brings back memories of the beautiful orchard of Olivet, the flowering plants, the lush green pitches, the vibrant fish-pond, the school farm, the palm trees. All these features are now history. The science laboratories, fine arts studio, music laboratory, home economics building are all mere shadows of past glory. The sports facilities, once the envy of all, are nothing to write home about; the lawn tennis, basketball, volleyball, squash racket [now converted to mini-market] cricket pitch etc.

The balls and jerseys are no longer available Olivetians now wear tattered jerseys, hoses and boots to competitions the Olivet relay teams, the soccer team, basketball etc dreaded conquerors of the western part of Nigeria. The Literary & Debating Society, the Science Club, Press Club, The Culture & Drama Society are all grasping for breath. This is definitely not the Olivet we knew!!!

The vision of Olivet is that of a great institution with an enduring legacy of excellence in every field of human endeavor. The products are today great and proficient leaders of men in their chosen fields all over the world. The picture of Olivet of today is unacceptable: It is shameful!

THE NEEDS OF THE SCHOOL WHERE YOU CAN HELP OLIVET

While we count the losses of our beloved Olivet there are some things we can do to bring some respect back to the schools image. Sports is a very good avenue of rebuilding the image of the school we look forward to the day the present Olivet will play in the finals of the All-Nigeria Secondary School Soccer Competition [Shell Cup] Good quality outfits: Track suits, Jerseys, Boots, Hoses, Spike shoes etc will go a long way in telling people outside that Olivet is still alive.

Another area is in the provision of computers, books for the library, exercise books for indigent students, scholarship awards, prizes for outstanding students etc.

We acknowledge all those that have contributed one thing or the other to the school in the past Chief Harry Akande, Mr. Oba Otudeko [Encyclopaedia set to the library], Olivet 6064, 72, 7782, Ibadan Polytechnic Chapter to mention a few.
