Winterhawks Prepared for Provincials
The East Kings Winterhawks Midget 'A' team were busy preparing for the Midget 'A' Provincials the past three weeks. After defeating the Sackville Flyers in two games to advance to the Provincials the team then took a much-needed Christmas break in February as the players got to relax the following weekend and played no games.
The first opponent after the break was the Berwick Bruins 'AA' team. Playing with only 11 players East Kings skated away with a 1-1 tie. The next game the Winterhawks played with 10 players and although they out skated their opponents and lead 2-1 entering the 3rd period, Berwick scored 3 unanswered goals to win 4-2.
Last weekend the Truro Bearcats came to town. Playing with a couple of affiliated players East Kings came from behind in the 3rd period to win 4-3. The next day the Winterhawks travelled to Debert to face the Bearcats and despite playing with only 9 skaters, East Kings kept it close and lost a high scoring squeaker 7-6.
Leading the way in points for East Kings in the 4 matches with 4 points each were Evan Wittenberg (2-2), Morgan Steele (2-2), Andy Clement (1-3) and Ryan Murphy (0-4). Mike Sponagle had 3(1-2) while Corey Chapman (2-0), Brandon Conrad (1-1) and Ethan Bent (1-1) had two apiece. Brandon Benjamin, Chris Moore and Daniel Mossman each scored a goal while Jeff Lawrence added an assist.
The team is mentally focussed and physically healthy entering today's first match at 4pm against the Canadians in Kentville. The second match pits the Winterhawks against Sydney at 8pm while on Saturday they square off against Cole Harbour at 11am and Truro at 3:30 pm. While the Winterhawks have a few tricks up their sleeves entering Provincial play, in the end hard work and disciplined play will be the key ingredients to a successful weekend.
Congratulations to the East Kings Female Midget team as they won Gold last weekend at the Provincials. Good luck to the Bantam 'AA' Winterhawks as they compete this weekend in their Provincials.
This will be an extremely exciting weekend of hockey in the Valley and the only place to be if you want fast action hockey with high stakes. Come on out and cheer on your favourite team. See you there.
