Executive Meeting — June 20, 2000 7:30 pm — Port Williams School

Members present: Tim Ciappara, Brian Rhodenizer, John Curry, Alice Ciappara, Carrie Hemmings, Mary Lou Conrad, Scott Bigelow, George Curry, Peter Hayes, Reid Johnson.

Tim advised that a Budget Committee should be set. The committee will comprise Laurie Lightfoot, chair; Alice, Carrie and Joanne Reid.

Based on last years' registration numbers East Kings has:

• 19 - 9 year olds
• 16 - 8 year olds
• 53 - Atom
• 45 - Pee Wee
• 36 - Bantams
• 7 - Midgets

There may be Women's Midget team play out of East Kings this year.

Peter Baldwin is looking into having a AAA Atom team.

Extra ice time may be required if there are two Bantam teams, AAA Atom and Women's team.

Budget Committee to see if there would be any change in ice fees since last year. Also check about ice time at Acadia Arena and cost.

Tim reported on NSHA Annual Meeting he attended June 17th.

There will be no age change take effect this year.

Referees - talked to Peter Sellars about getting Jimmy Kennie to give referee clinic to Bantam players so they could referee younger teams. Last year this was not permitted, however it would discovered that it was not a NSHA rule and it has and is being done in other associations.

EKMHA would purchase a manual, there would be no charge to the participants. They would not receive usual referee fee for games but something would be arranged for this. The participants would then be able to take Referee's Course on their own the following year. This experience would give them the opportunity to determine if they liked refereeing before having to payout the $135 course fee.

The participants would be be covered by existing insurance.

It was also discovered that 3 referees were not mandated by NSHA, other than for AAA.

There has been a new position developed, a Referee Supervisor, to monitor and evaluate referees at the AAA level.

Tim will speak to Jimmy Kennie to see if he will offer the clinic. If Jimmy is unable or unwilling to do so, Tim will seek out someone else to do it.

Novice - Halifax operates its Novice program differently than we do. There is an Initiation Program whereby players are moved from age grouping to higher level play based on skills tests. It was decided we would follow same program this year.

Kentville has applied to offer Initiation Program, Coaches Clinics, Safety Program. They also have a liaison who will contact Tim and a representative of Windor Minor Hockey to discuss further amalgamation negotiations.

There will be a NSHA fee increase. An increase of $5.50 per child was suggested but voted down. The increase will be $3.00 per child. That brings the cost we pay to NSHA to $40.50 per child.

Carrie sat in on Insurance Meeting. Dental and Ambulance fees are 80% covered. Form signing had been a problem in the past because forms were not sent with the child to hospital. It was thought that a package would be put together and delivered to team managers so appropriate forms could accompany injured players to hospital.

Bring checking into Pee Wee Rep may be brought in starting January 1, 2001. Clinics will be offerred through NSHA. They have 40 instructors now. The cost would be to the instructor giving the course. It was also thought that a Bantam checking clinic be offerred at the EKMHA hockey school.

Marion Dowell is still zone director.

The game cap has not changed from last year.

John asked about holding an Early Bird Tournament. He'd be willing to help organize. It would be for Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam.

John asked if we should advertise for coaches. Alice said last year's advertisement didn't get any response. Money was spent for nothing. This year we will not advertise for coaches.

Discussion took place about boundaries. In particular if Fred MacAskill would be permitted to remain in East Kings district. He resides within Kentville's boundaries. Kentville would have to release his child/children to play in East Kings if the MacAskill's wanted to stay in East Kings.

Discussion took place about coach and team selection. Tim said we will have to assign a Head Coach and a Director?. It was decided that once Rep teams were selected, the remaining players would be assigned to teams on the basis of skill level, so these teams would be equal calibre. This should be under the direction of the Head Coach and approved by the Executive. This would be done to allieviate the discontent that has occurred over the last few years with one very strong house team, leaving the other team(s) weaker.

Alice, Carrie and Mary Lou will prepare a Newsletter to be sent out in August. The newsletter will inform people about registration time and place, fees, etc.

There will be another meeting late July or early August. The exact date was not set.
