SOME WAYS TO HELP YOUR PLANET AND BANK ACCOUNT
Print this page for easy reference.

1. When going grocery shopping, take one canvas shopping bag or several. You're probably thinking a canvas shopping bag would be cheesey, it's not, in fact some stores charge extra for the amount of bags you use. It's a great example to others when you bring your own bag(s). If you have a big family and not enough bags, reuse the plastic bags. You can use plastic bags for trash can liners etc.

2. When doing any shopping, buy the product with the least amount of packaging--if possible. Find recycle centers in your area if they are available. Recycle all boxes, plastics, metals and paper. If you don't have recycle centers in the area, write your mayor, commissioner, etc. and request recycle bins. Use recycle bins at work/school. If bins are not available, request them.

3. This is a BIGGIE; turn off lights when not using them. Use the most conservative bulbs and fixtures when security lights are needed. If you don't need the brightest lights, then don't use the brightest. Just think about what you need and you'll save money. More power is not always better, especially for the wallet. When buying regular everyday bulbs, keep in mind that the lower the wattage, the cooler the bulb, thus probably lasting longer which helps your wallet and needed landfill space. The dollar store is a great place to buy everyday bulbs and household items; money saved is not money burnt. When disposing of flourescent bulbs, take them to a local school or place that has a bulb grinder and barrel. Bulb eaters as they're called, grind the glass and catch the contents that are later recycled. I don't know about other states, but it is illegal to throw away flourescent bulbs in Ohio. You could even live in a house with lots of natural lighting. Use natural lighting when possible.

4. Do the regular conservative routine which includes clipping coupons. Don't leave water running/dripping when not using. Put down storm glass in windows/doors during winter and make sure the windows are sealed okay. Place some old cloth inside the window and shut it to keep out more cold. Don't waste food or other products. Don't put off potty training your kids; diapers make lots of garbage. If you have a big family, buy bulk if it is cheaper that way. Use rechargable batteries. Keep doors/windows shut when running the heat or A.C.

5. DON'T BUY BOTTLED WATER. Filter your own water and place it in Nalgene bottles or other water bottles that can be easily cleaned too. Every so often you may need to use anti-bacterial dish soap on them. If you buy bottles other than Nalgene, it's hit or miss; some bottles out there make water taste like plastic.
