Rear Apron Work
Well, I'll start by saying, that this is not like other removable rear aprons.  I could have easily done Dzus fasteners, and been done a long time ago.  But, since I want my car to be a sleeper, I had to make it so I could put my apron on and off easily, without any visible fasteners.  I dont want anything to give this car away.
First thing I did was draw a straight line from the engine compartment sides, to the back of the car.  This will help me in the future.
After that, I welded a 10" piece of flat stock to the car.  This spaces me out from the body enough to clear everything, and also gives me strong flat surface to work with.
My home made jig.  some small angle stock, a couple peices of scrap steel, and an old bent accel. cable tube for a handle.  Wanna try to guess what the heck this is before you scroll down?
Here I am, using my home made jig.  it's ugly as anything else, but it's doing the job.  But what job IS it doing?
I used it to weld the two tubes to the flat stock.  The jig was made so the tubes would be exactly parallel with eachother, and could be used on both sides.  The tube is 1/2" stock, and the tubes sat in the groove of the angle stock.  It still looks funky right now.
Silver Bullets.  Not really.  I made these out of 3/8" stock, and sanded them down smooth enough that they would slide into the 1/2 pipe.  4 of these are needed for the whole thing.
I slid the 'bullets' into the pipes in the body, layed a piece of flat stock over them and tack welded them on.  I pulled the piece off, and finished welding them up.  Do you see where this is going?
