Science Fact

Dental decay could happen right after you ate something unhealthy.

How does this happen?

All carbohydrate foods eventually break down into simple sugars: glucose, fructose, maltose and lactose. Some foods, called fermentable carbohydrates, break down in the mouth, whereas others don't break down until they move further down the digestive tract. It’s the fermentable carbohydrates that work with bacteria to begin the decay process and eventually destroy teeth.

Types of teeth

Humans have four types of teeth having a different appearance and performing certain function. The front teeth or the incisor help to incise food. There are two incisors in each quadrant of jaw. Canines are teeth that are present at the corners of the mouth. They are pointed teeth that help in shearing food. Next to the canines, two premolars which have broader grinding surfaces help to chew and grind food. The molars are large back teeth having a large grinding surface used primarily to grind food.

Milk teeth and permanent teeth?

Humans exhibit two sets of teeth. At birth no teeth are visible in the oral cavity. Soon the primary or the milk teeth appear in the oral cavity. These primary teeth are later shed off and are replaced by the permanent teeth.
