If a dog were your teacher. . .

Enjoy life with the enthusiasm of a pup!!

IF A DOG WERE YOUR TEACHER,
                            you would learn stuff like.....

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to
           be pure ecstasy.
When it's in your best interest -- practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting, when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt
thing and pout...run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.  Stop when you have had enough.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and
           nuzzle them gently.

Applying the above lessons to you life will make it a little less RUFF!!!!!

This is one of those e-mails that everyone gets, and I'll admit that I often delete them, but this one struck me.
When I set the goal to teach at the college level (fall of 1985), I changed my life. Now I knew where I was headed, and I was not going to let anyone stop me--and no one has.
Oh, I have refined my vision somewhat, but basically for the last fifteen years, I have spent so much time charging through life with my eyes fastened on my goal that I have had to force myself to stop and revel in the small joys.  Even when I drive from point A to point B, I'm so focussed on getting where I am going that I often miss what is in between. (So, if you see me in the hall, and I'm somewhat distracted, I'm usually focussed on something. Heck, I might not even see you.)

This e-mail came to me at one of those focussed moments.  Although I have a cat, I appreciate the exuberance of  a dog and how it revels in life.  My goal is to work hard AND to play hard.  Sometimes I succeed, but too often I find that I delay playing for some "future goal." Now this is a good thing, until you think that I decided at Christmas of 85 that I wanted to be a University Professor and I didn't finish my Ph.D. until 2001. Then once that is accomplished there are articles to read, articles to publish, books to read, books to propose . . . I think you get the picture.
