On the first voyage, the crew was paid as follows: the
masters and pilots got 2000 maravedis (one maravedi = 5 cents, so 2000 maravedis
= $100), able seamen received 1000 maravedis per month($50), and ordinary seamen
(huh?) and ship's boys received 666 maravedis per month ($33.30). The
total cost per month was 250,180 maravedis per month ($12,509).
