What types of player characters are available?

There are three major ways in which the player can develop his character. These are: the way of the survivor, the way of the warrior and the way of the wizard. When starting the game the player needs to select the initial way in which he wants to specialize, as well as the gender of the character he´ll be playing with. These options decide what the ingame representation of the player will look like. The appearance and the animations of the player character change depending on what he or she is wearing.

How does the player develop his character?

The player can develop his character throughout the game by means of boosting his primary stats and learning skills. The primary stats consist of strength, agility, constitution, intelligence, survival and speed. In order to increase one of these stats, the player needs to increase his level. To do this, he needs to acquire experience points. In addition to the primary stats, there are several secondary stats that are either derived from the primary stats, or influenced by other aspects of the game (like the items he is wearing). The secondary stats include various resistances as well as offense/defense modifiers and hitpoints/mana increases.

What´s the function of the primary stats?

Strength determines how much you can carry, the damage you do with strength based weapons and which items you can equip.
Agility affects your accuracy, evasion and gives a damage boost for agility based weapons.
Constitution determines how much vitality you have.
Intelligence affects your magical points and adds damage to spiritual based weapons.
Survival affects your luck, initiative, accuracy and regeneration Speed affects your evasion and initiative.

What is affected by your primary stats?

Initiative determines who will make the first move (affected by survival and speed).
Luck increases the chance of finding better items (affected by survival). Regeneration increases the rate at which you regain your vitality and magic points (affected by survival).
Accuracy determines how accurate you are with weapons and will raise your chance to hit an enemy (affected by survival and agility).
Evasion determines your ability to evade attacks (affected by survival and agility).
Damage tells you how much damage you´ll do when you attack an enemy (affected by strength and agility).

How does the skill system work?

You will receive a number of available skills in the beginning of the game. Those skills depend on the character you start with. A warrior will have some warrior skills available, etc

During the game you will be given the ability to learn new skills, either by reading a skill book or by learning them in return for gold from various NPC´s. The instant you learn a new skill it will be available in your skill tree where you have the option to address skill points to it.

The 4 main skill paths are "Warrior", "Wizard", "Survival" and "Summoning Dolls". These skills are accessible for both your Death Knight and Hero; regardless what class you choose in the beginning.
This allows building a very versatile character. The possibilities seem endless thanks to the large amount of different skills available.

How many skills are there?

There are more than 290 skills to learn including advanced alchemy, craftsmanship, trap creation, nature and weather magic, shaman magic, equipment embellishing,...

How does conversation with other characters work?

Whenever another character says something, the player can select from a list of answers. While talking to a character, the player can at all times interrupt the conversation or enter trade mode with that character. Additionally, the player can at all times review past conversations.

I don´t like to read. Do I have to go through all those conversations?

No. Beyond Divinity features an "exit dialog" button that you can almost always use to get rid of conversations.

If I don´t read the conversations, how will I be able to go through the story?

A large part of the main plot gets told through in-game scripted scenes. Additionally, when a conversation is crucial to the main plot, or if you have to make a choice, you will not be able to exit the conversation immediately.

Will I gain benefits from reading all the conversations?

Yes. You will undoubtedly pick up more quests and information, but the game is perfectly playable without going through all of them. It´s really up to you.

How does trade mode work?

Both the trader and you show in a screen what wares and gold they have to trade. You then choose what item(s) you want from the trader and have to give him item(s) or gold in return with an equal or more value than the item(s) you desire.

Are there special items the player can use to boost his character?

Yes. Every item a character can wear can have different sorts of boosts. The player that carries the crystal bag gains additional boosts in defenses depending on what crystals are inside.

How does the player find special items?

Special items can be dropped by creatures, can be given as a reward for a quest or can be found in treasures. You´ll have more chance finding a special item if your character´s luck is higher.

Can I enchant items?

When an item has the possibility to insert charms you can enchant it. Making it more powerful than it already was

How does the inventory work?

Every item has a certain weight. How much you can carry depends on how much strength your character has. When he reaches 2/3 of this weight he will be encumbered which results in only being able to walk, he won´t be able to run anymore.

Can the player character run?

Yes, unless he is encumbered.

Do the actions of the player character affect the way other characters react to him?

Yes. If you start attacking a certain group of characters while they are neutral to you, the entire group will attack you on sight from then on.

What happens if I steal something?

You´ll be richer than before. The pickpocket skill allows you to steal from NPC´s, use it wisely since you can only steal a number of items.
