The Call
One Hundred Good Wishes Quilt Swap

The tradition for One Hundred Good Wishes Quilt began in Northern China. When a new child was born, family and friends would give the parents pieces of fabric, generally from clothing they'd worn, in order to create a quilt from the 100 pieces of fabric (wishes). The quilt was meant to wrap and warm the child in good wishes and the energy of the people who were around the child.

Parents adopting from China have taken on this tradition by creating One Hundred Good Wishes quilts for their children, and many parents who have/are adopting from other countries have taken on this tradition as well. With each fabric piece that is given to the new parents, a wish for the child is also sent, written on paper so that the child will always know the wishes made just for them.

How can I obtain more fabric pieces beyond our DTC group?
Many people have sent out letters or mentioned to friends and family their plans to collect fabric to create a One Hundred Good Wishes quilt and have received fabric that way. On Yahoo there is also a One Hundred Good Wishes Quilt (OHGWQ) group where people swap fabrics. A person will offer to host a swap, some swaps have themes and some don't, which will generally involve about 20 or so people. This is a great way to not only obtain fabric, but to show the support your child has from around the world.

UPDATE:
Feb. 2005--Our Yahoo Group is currently setting up a database for all those interested in participating in a fabric and wish swap.  Please fill out your information in the database at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DTCFebruary2005 if you are interested.
If you are worried about actually making/sewing the quilt, below are some websites to get the sewing done!

Secret Buddies

To participate, put your name and address in the
database (on the Yahoo Group site) under secret buddies sign up. Shortly after March 15th, you will received the name and home mailing address of your "secret buddy".  Keep this information safe, as your secret buddy will remain the same during our wait for referrals.  Each month, there will be a theme.  Please send an item to your secret buddy also with a note. Be creative! All items do not necessarily have to be baby items.  Have fun!
