The Return of Dr Octagon Kool Keith 2006
Kool Keith, legendary MC, is always outdoing himself. You might think, the greatest MC in the world, who has been rapping since the 80's (with Ultramagnetic MCs), would not feel the need to constantly re-invent his sound, and raise Hip-Hop...but with The Return of Dr Octagon, a decade after the first Doc Oc album, Keith has given us a new music that points to the possibilities the future presents, in a world where music has gone stale...
The first song on the album, Trees, is a bit unexpected for Keith...usually he doesnt make a statement in this sense, but the loss of Trees on the planet has led to a decline in the quality of the air we breathe. Al Green, one of the best tracks on the album, has Keith lamenting the pathetic abilities of many rappers today, encouraging them to "Pack Yo Shit" over some seriously funky guitar and keys, before going into Gorilla Driving a Pick-Up Truck, a totally tripped-out acid-country song with synths oozing psychedelic ribbons while the universe expands, Dr Octagon in his trademark reptilian rasp tells the story of highway chase between the good Doctor and a bandana-clad-gorilla driving a pick-up truck...
The songs do not stick to a standard rap format, but incorporate a live band playing unique music, drawing on rock, hip-hop, funk, and techno, while Keith uses spoken-word poetry with novel cadences, pushing the bounds of music the way Jim Morrison did with the Doors...
