Oak Creek
Bud and Linda's Place in the Squaw Valley
We're situated on 20 acres in the Sierra foothills west of Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.  This hilly countryside makes for very nice views as well as a challenging homesite.  Our first obstacle was cutting a road through Oak covered hillsides without removing many of the larger specimen oaks.  There are three predominant types: Blue Oak, White Oak, and so-called "Live-Oak"  The Blue Oaks appear to be the hardiest, with larger trunks, slower growing and almost permanent greenish-blue leaves.  There are more than 50 large Blue Oaks with diameters greater than 3' and over 500 years old.
The basic geology is granitic with very stiff largely decomposed granite soils with clay and clay inclusions.  There are numerous quartz rocks with a very thin DG soil horizon. "Oak Creek" named after our favorite spot in Arizona, sits on three hills.  The house sits near the center of the property overlooking a large canyon to the south, surrounded on two sides by a large tract of BLM land and has a small intermittant creek.  The gravel driveway is about a 1/3rd of a mile long to the nearest road and 3/4 mile to the nearest hiway. Near BLM land, there are lots of trails to hike.
The house is constructed of structural steel, glass with a cement stucco veneer making it virtually fireproof.  After living in San Diego, we were concerned with hillside living and the possibility of wildfires.  The house and shop have very little wood or combustible materials in their construction.  The basic design incorporates a lot of passive solar features and with a hydronic radiant floor heating system is extremely comfortable in both summer and winter with no drafts.
We received our Certificate of Occupancy (final) on July 1, 2007, promptly moved in and have since been relaxing.  We still have the floors to stain, but the interior trim is all done.  With 9' to 12' ceilings, alll the doors are 8' tall.  Interior doors are Alder, The front door is 2" thick quarter-sawn Oak, 8'x4'.  At the right you see some of the steel studs being assembled on the exterior. We're now creating an Office space  for our Global Headquarters.  Linda's brother is a sawyer and is making the massive oak timbers we'll used for the pool house. Her recent plan is to change its location and make it the "Global-headquarters" and Gym area.  We'll see.
Prior to Stucco, we added an additional 1" foam insulation for a total of R-29 in the Walls.  the Large windows (6'x6') have great views and the electric 'eye-brow' windows improve ventilation.
The southern 'Nana-wall" glass window system opens fully for an 8' tall x 20' wide "lanai" view of the Canyon.  To see more use the page 2 link below.
