Breeds - The Basenji

Height     38-44 cms

Weight   10-13 kgs

Color      black, black and tan or chestnut. A large white patch on the chest extending to the back of the neck, white feet and the white tip of the tail are typical features of the Basenji. Coat is dense and short.

The Basenji was considered to be a pariah dog but only in 1930 were they recognised as a seperate breed with typical characteristics. This breed originated in Sudan, Zaire and Central Africa.

The Basenji dogs do not bark and usually have bells tied on their necks to enable the hunters to follow them in the forests having thick vegetation. They are usually used to hunt small game like rhodents, deers and duikers.
