MOSS LANDS FIRST RECRUIT AS SEAHAWK COACH

WILMINGTON, N.C. Darryl Felder, a combination guard who starred at high schools in Georgia and California, has signed a letter of intent to play mens basketball next season at UNC Wilmington, becoming the first recruit for new head coach Benny Moss.

The 6-3, 185-pounder grew up on the West Coast before playing most of his career at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga. Felder moved to Diamond Bar, Calif., with four weeks left in his senior season, playing out his prep career with the Brahmas.

Darryls a very talented player who will be a great addition to our program, said Moss. He understands the game of basketball and is a proven winner. Hes a very good student in the classroom as well and will be a great asset to our program.

Felder played two seasons for Coach Jerry Meuschkes squad at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga., before moving across the country to join Diamond Bars program in January. Felder averaged 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists as a junior at Harrison, earning All-Region honors in the 5-A classification, and was collecting 18.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists before moving to California after the Christmas break.

The folks there are going to enjoy Darryl as a student and an athlete, Meuschke said of Felder, who was named Player-of-the-Month for December by the Cobb County Tipoff Club and the top prep player in the first half of the season by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Darryl shoots the ball very consistently. I think hes going to be a very good college player.

After moving to the West Coast, Felder closed out his prep career for Coach Bob Withers at Diamond Bar, a school located near Anaheim that produced NBA star Keith Van Horn and St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds. Darryls a very gifted player, said Withers. Hes very smooth and hes a very good shooter. He worked very hard in practice and I think hes going to be a sleeper in college.

Felder also played AAU basketball for California Hoops, a club coached by James Casey. Darryls a very explosive player who runs the floor well, Casey said. He has a quick first step and penetrates the lane very, very well.

According to Meuschke, Georgia Tech recently inquired about Felders future. UNLV, Xavier and New Mexico were also reportedly interested in Felders talents.
