| 1990 Glass Era Humanism
Form communicates worldview.
In design theory, this is well established (Gestalt psychology, modernist design, early HCI principles). Square edges weren’t just a style of choice, they expressed confidence in rational systems.
What square / rectilinear forms communicated (1988–1993)
Consciously or subconsciously:
- Control – systems are bounded, legible, manageable
- Precision – intentionality, accuracy, engineered outcomes
- Stability – things sit firmly; they don’t wobble or melt
- Forward motion – grids imply progress, direction, flow
- Belief in systems – institutions, technology, design, planning
- Accountability – edges define limits; responsibility has borders
