My thoughts on Plastic Milk Jugs to replace Lumber

Trees for lumber cannot grow fast enough to meet demand. A large percentage of people, who harvest this lumber for a living, will envariably have to re-train for a new job in their future.

As you are reading this, there are several companies who are producing deck-grade boards and other common sizes like 2X4's etc...that are made from recycled milk jugs. What a wonderful idea!

They solve 5 problems all at once!!

    1. There's less plastic going into landfills.
    2. There's fewer trees being cut, giving them more time to grow between harvests.
    3. The product is rot-proof and decay-resistant. And requires minimal maintainence.
    4. It gives several people a job. Someone to sort the jugs, several people to make the product.
    5. Idealy, it will be reducing a high percentage of destructive logging practices.

There are 2 main problems.

    1. The product is too expensive. Current prices average $30.00+ for a single 12ft, 2X4! compared to actual wood at $1.40. That is absurd!
This should not be, considering the vast quantity of jugs which are not, but should be, being collected for recycling. They should hire someone to sort them - job security.
    2. Too few companies are making them. It's just simply easier to find wood to use.
