(NSW Wildlife Information and Rescue Service Inc) was the first full time co-ordinated network of trained volunteer rescuers, foster carers and veterinarians established to try to stem the wanton destruction of our wildlife.

It is an independent, non profit organization operating under license from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

WIRES aims include :-

  • The rescue and rehabilitation of sick, orphaned or displaced native animals, through a network of trained volunteer rescuers, foster carers and veterinarians
  • The use of rehabilitation methods that will allow the animal to fend for itself when released back into the wild.
  • Promotion of wildlife protection.
  • The provision of wildlife information to the public.

WIRES is an Australian organization operating only in New South Wales and today receive more than 40,000 calls from the public each year, involving 25 Branches throughout the state.

Central Northern NSW branch with it’s main base in Tamworth came into being in Jan 1991. It covers and area from Moree and Inverell in the north to Narrabri in the west, Walcha in the east and Scone in the south.

The throughput of animals and advice calls has reached 3000 a year with a membership of rescuers, carers etc of 125 for the current year

WIRES Tamworth is managed by a committee with representatives including Vets, animal carers, rescuers, conservationists and the National Parks and Wildlife service

I have been a member of WIRES for a number of years and although not as active a member as I was ..I am still very much interested in the excellent work done by them and continue to support the organization as best I can
