Intelligent Comedy
B"H

For decades I've been saying: "If I didn't feel compelled to write about social issues,
I'd write comedy."

I think that comedy is the most demanding genre of all. Certainly, it requires no less skill than poetry. Split-second timing is of the essence. An extraneous word, or the absense of a necessary word, can throw a line off entirely. I have deliberated long and hard whether to use a comma or not in some lines. Semi-colons aren't funny in print.

I have sat in Eddie Murphy movies enrapt in awe at his genius. Writing comedy is the top of the writing world, in my opinion.

My writing a piece of comedy, pure comedy, not satire, is a watershed in my life, then. It is a taking up of the pen not for the purpose of wielding it as an intellectual tool, or brandishing it as the most powerful weapon, but taking it up as an amusement, purely for fun. It also means that I have found the courage within myself to attempt to do that which I consider so very difficult.
