NEWARK EARTHWORKS
NEWARK, OHIO

The largest geometric earthworks are in Newark, Ohio.  They were constructed by the
Hopewell Culture and probably date from at least 250 A.D.  The most significant sites are

Great Circle                                                                              Octagon Earthworks

My favorite explanation for these earthworks is that they were a model of sorts for the universe and the belief that they could have served as a portal for the spirits of their deceased to reach the next world.
A sketch of a survey from the mid 19th century.   Before development destroyed much of the Newark Earthworks there were walls, roads and mounds spread out over 4 square miles.  Some are still in existence, some are not.

Their ultimate purpose is still a mystery.
