Donna Summer Breaking News!

Just as we are waiting impatiently for Donna’s forthcoming studio album from Sony (rumored to be released in October this year), we have been blessed with a couple of unexpected gems, as well as the news of a major project that is coming this summer! Donna is certainly everywhere. Let’s take a look:

"The Power of One"

This has got to be the hottest song this summer! It has been reported by Liz Smith that Donna will be teaming up with superstar producer David Foster (think Toni Braxton "Unbreak My Heart") for a single from the forthcoming Pokemon the Movie 2000 soundtrack! The song is a beautiful ballad called "The Power of One" on Atlantic Records. It apparently has the word "HIT" written all over the place, and certainly should be Donna’s biggest chart contender for years. Rumor has it that there will be dance mixes, too! The single is scheduled for release on 11 July, followed by the soundtrack on 18 July. The movie will come out on 23 July. There is a WB Pokemon TV special on 16 July, and Donna will be interviewed then! Watch this space for more information on it. - Chester

"The Power of One" is available for pre-release order at CDNow and Amazon.com.

"Dreamcatcher"

The track is "Dreamcatcher" and the soundtrack is Naturally Native, the first ever feature movie completely produced by Native Americans. Donna surprises us once again with her refreshing acoustic contribution to this soundtrack, which contains mostly original compositions written for the award-winning movie. We did a little investigation as to how this collaboration came about, and found out that Donna was apparently approached by the company that produced the movie, Red Horse Native Productions. Red Horse Native Productions is owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which also owns the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, where Donna performs regularly. Apparently, Donna is a quarter Cherokee herself. She wrote the song with her musical director Michael Hanna, and it boasts a wonderfully earthy tone reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. The rest of the CD is also beautifully performed by native American artists. If you like honest, sincere music, this is the CD for you. - Chester

"Naturally Native" is released on Silver Wave Records, available in all record stores, as well as directly from:

Silver Wave Records, P.O. Box 7943, Boulder, CO 80306, USA. Tel:(303) 443 5617 e-mail:[email protected] website:www.silverwave.com

"When I Look Up"

This quarter’s other new offering is "When I Look Up", a duet from the Darwin Hobbs CD, Vertical. Like the rest of the CD, it is an R&B flavored gospel tune. Donna’s part is not large, but she does blend well with Darwin Hobbs (who sounds something like Luther Vandross). Fan opinion is divided on this one though. Some prefer its R&B flavor to Donna’s previous gospel efforts, but I personally prefer the more personal approach of last year’s My Prayer For You. Either way, it is definitely worth having. - Cathy

Darwin Hobbs’ "Vertical" is available on EMI Gospel.
