Venezia II
This is without a doubt my most favorite photo of the Grande Canal, taken from the Rialto Bridge.  This view is so inspiring you can just look out for hours at the traffic, the water, the people, and the distance.  If you look down the canal you'll see the fog, and how it just seems to make the buildings disappear or vanish.  On the right side of the photo you can see a green canopy - it is attached to the facade of Hotel Locanda Ovidius.

After having been to this majestic and mysterious city on the water, I can certainly understand why it has been a favorite for many of the world's well known authors, poets and artists.

Left - This is a great photo of the Rialto from the gondola.  Up ahead of the gondola is a public transportation bus.  They're usually full of people since they are well used by the locals to commute to work.

Now these two were real characters!  These gentlemen are gondoliers named Pietro and Roberto.  We took our gondola ride with Pietro who sang every Italian song he could think of for our 45 minute ride.  He was charming and funny and he's native to Venice.  We saw so many out of the way canals, some so narrow I thought we would hit some of the buildings.   He took us under low footpath bridges...  He was quite comical, and would yell to any on coming boats before he turned into the narrow canals, sometimes stopping to chat with locals.  I wondered how they turn corners because of all the blind spots, until I spotted the large round parabolic security-type mirrors sometimes used in the corners of retail stores.

When we returned to our drop off point Roberto was apparently waiting for a "fare" and Pietro joked with him and proceeded to stick his tongue out at him, I think, because Roberto still hadn't had a fare by the time we returned.
