Until recently, my only definite RATHBONE ancestor was Hannah, who married William SUTTON at Harthill, Cheshire in 1830.   They married by Licence and she was declared as Spinster otp of full age.   There were no Family witnesses, and no other RATHBONES in the Parish either at this time, or when she was born c1800.

However, a late discovery suggests that Hannah was the daughter of George and Alice nee SOCKETT, and was baptised at Bruera, Cheshire, in 1798: if she was my Hannah, she understated her age at marriage and later !  Since then, further information, courtesy Dorcas Hendershott (see below) has taken me back three more generations to before 1700.  From being the shortest page on this site, it has become one of the longest in date terms !

She had only a short life, and perhaps not a happy one:  her husband died in 1840, and she in 1847, both at Frodsham, Cheshire, leaving six children. I have traced only three in 1851, and only two of those in 1881.  I would very much like to hear of any later news.

It was a trace of Hannah’s son William Sutton jnr. in 1851, living with James RATHBONE, an uncle in Birmingham, born in Saighton Cheshire c1805 which led me to Hannah’s parents.  James's father was George, a farmer, and he had a sister Hannah, although baptised two years before I expected.

Hannah's married life centred on The Millstone pub, High St., Frodsham, which had been in the SUTTON family for at least three generations, and passed to John DAVIES, the husband of her eldest daughter Ellen for a few years.
