Pam Grose

I have always been involved with arts and crafts of some form or another since I could crawl. Five years ago I attended the local Tafe Campus and completed two years of Art & Design. Since then the love of drawing and painting incorporated with sewing opened up the world of cloth sculpture. Having a passion for cartoons and children's illustrations, my own artwork has always displayed the same qualities.

I have been making dolls for approximately 18 months to 2 years. Over the past 12 months teaching doll classes have taken a great deal of my time, which has been very rewarding. Lately, I have been given the opportunity to teach in Perth and other places besides my own hometown. This has been an incredible experience.

The Bust
Tuesdays class is FULL
Spaces are still available in the extra class scheduled for Thursday (124b)

One Day Class
Tuesday and Thursday
124/124b

This doll will teach you the very basics of cloth sculpture. The main difference between this type of sculpture compared to "soft sculptured dolls" is that it is very firm and rigid; this requires a different stuffing technique. You start with a basic calico pattern that you stuff firmly to which you attach stuffing where needed. A lycra skin is then placed over the piece, sewn in place and sculptured. In the making of this doll you will learn how to needle sculpt eyes and brow, lids, nose and nostrils, lips, ears, breast and nipples. The eyes I use are 'Das' marbles, hardened at room temperature, painted with details then covered with Araldite glue to give them a glassy appearance. A demonstration of painting technique and shading will be given to be able to complete bust. At the end of the day you should have completed bust ready to embellish.

Level: All
Kit: Includes pattern and set of eyes.
Preparation: Sewn doll.

Cherub
Please note this class has been cancelled
Two Day Class
Thursday/Friday

This little fellow is quite versatile. With the addition of snout, wings, ears and tail, can be turned into a teddy bear, cat, lion, fairy, mermaid, a cute basic doll that you can embellish as you wish. You also have the option of making it a rigid sculpture or having articulated limbs. In making this doll you will learn basic needle sculpting techniques and how to manipulate the components of the body, form eye sockets, eyelids and brow, nose and nostrils, mouth and chubby cheeks, chin, navel and buttocks (accessories e.g. wings, ears, snouts, tails etc.). This technique just requires a lycra skin over the face to sculpt into. The rest of the body is just calico. You can paint the whole of the body if you wish or otherwise the face, neck and hands and feet, then clothe the doll. At the end of the second day you should have a completed doll.

Level:
Intermediate - Experienced
Sewing Machine
