His primary career was Musician, and he played in several bands, including, in the latter years of their careers, those of Tommy Roe and Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs. His favorite color was green. On the last full day of his life, 17 February 2008, Don was having chest pains. He had had ulcers, recently cured, and a colonoscopy showed negative (non-cancerous) results. He had a doctor's appointment scheduled in March to get a check of his heart and his general health. He thought the chest pains were gastric; during the day he and his wife Patti read and discussed the symptoms of a heart attack, and Don went on the internet to confirm it, and insisted that those were not his symptoms. Patti went to bed at about 11:20 pm and Don, sitting in the living room, said he felt better. He did not survive the night. 2 Tribute: (my own) Losing an only brother is a strange experience. For most of our lives we were not close. He led a life that I was only vaguely aware of, far different from mine, and in a far different place. Although I would see him at my mother's house on Thanksgiving and Christmas, only in the last few years of his life did we communicate regularly, and that was mostly by email. Now I see or hear things that I would like to tell him about, as I have done in the past, and then I remember... There is a void, an empty space in my life, that he had once filled. And I wasn't even aware of it until he was gone. He had many, many friends, from bikers to businessmen, and quite a few of them attended the Memorial Service. At times his music played faintly in the background, intermixed with a mournful version of "Amazing Grace." No minister was present, but his wife and some of his friends gave moving eulogies, often quoting from songs he had written, and a few cried openly, all of which attests to how well-respected and loved he was.
