About Pet Insurance

Pet Insurance - some Facts:

Pet insurance is quite a bit like health insurance for people, but on a much smaller scale. For example, if your pet has medical coverage through a pet insurance program, you will pay a monthly premium, have a deductible and you may even have copays for routine health care for your pet. Pet insurance, like health insurance, does not cover pre-existing medical conditions.

If you elect to purchase a pet insurance policy for your cat or dog, it is probably best to do this when they are young, although there are plans that are designed for senior pets as well. Some pet insurance companies even offer insurance for exotic animals, such as birds, ferrets, and even potbelly pigs!

Like health insurance, pet insurance has a wide variety of plans and policies to help meet the diverse needs of pet owners all over the United States. There are even companies that offer pet insurance to those who live in Canada or the United Kingdom. Although the concept of pet insurance is relatively new, it is a wise choice for those that have purebred dogs or cats living in their homes. Purebred animals are more susceptible to illnesses (especially those related to their breed) and need regular veterinary care. However, any pet can benefit from having pet insurance.

Most major pet insurance companies have policies available for purchase over the internet, but there are a select few who still do business using toll free phone numbers. Each pet insurance company has several plans to choose from, and most of them are not very expensive. Pet insurance plans range anywhere from ten to thirty dollars a month, and have anywhere from a $50 to $100 deductible. Most often, if you go to the veterinarian, you will pay the costs in full up front, and submit a claim to the pet insurance company for reimbursement. Fortunately, if the bill is extremely high or if you are not prepared to pay for the bill, the veterinarian will let you pay a portion of the bill and the remainder when you receive the claim from the pet insurance company.

For owners who do not want traditional pet insurance or cannot afford it, there are even programs that offer discounts on veterinary services, boarding, pet sitting, and even pet supplies. Either way, pet insurance or an alternative is a wise choice for anyone with one, two, or eight furry friends in their homes. Most pet insurance companies offer discounts off the plan premiums if multiple pets are insured! Pet insurance is designed to protect the companions that you love most by giving your pet the opportunity to receive the medical care it needs at a low cost to you. Each and every pet should be able to live a full and happy life, and that is exactly what pet insurance plans help do. Before choosing a pet insurance plan for your pet, however, be sure compare plans and pet insurance companies to find the right plan for you.
