java

This web-site has been introduced for the benefit of users wishing to learn more about Java. When I mean users they could quite simply be the end user, that sees all the flashing lights and the panache. Then there is the user that sits for hours behind his monitor screen and taps away on his keyboard to give the visual effects and oddities that amaze and astonish the surfer.

background

Now then we all know that the initial proposal for a Web of linked documents came from CERN physicist Tim Berners-Lee way back in March 1989. 18 months later a prototype was operational, since then the web has grown exponentially, with the introduction of adding pictures, sound and other multimedia devices.

Java is one of the latest techniques in developing highly interactive applications. The Java program language originated from those lovely people at Sun Microsystems. Although Java borrows many of its ideas from C and C++, it is a NEW object oriented language, that is compatible with neither.

What is Java?

Surfers (hopefully) have come across Java at some stage whilst exploring the depths of the Internet whether there aware of it or not. The cute little additions to the standard HTML? Well that's probably Java. Java creates custom programs; it has the potential to create computational animation as opposed to sprite-based animation. This means that a Java applet could calculate a changing curve shape on the fly, react differently to changeable conditions, or build motion based on external input.

Java Scripts or Java Applets?

Some people who have heard of Java may be get a little confused between scripts and applets. Are they the same? Unfortunately not but, yes they are? Are you confused now?

Basically Java Script is compiled on your machine, quite similar to HTML, where as Java Applets are compiled already and are download when needed for the page. Are you still a little confused? Not to worry click on the appropriate link to find out more.

targets

As well as giving you some examples of Java and how some of them work I will hopefully show you some of the myths that surround Java and open your eyes to many things?

This tutorial will show you the difference between applets and scripts, and examples of both. I will discuss issues of security and other features of Java.

Please take note thou this tutorial will not make you a Java expert nor a Java script/applet writer but give you insight into what's involved and help you to understand a little about the language that is revolutionising the world of the Internet and communications.
