applets

what is it?

Java is programming language used to write programs called Applets that can be run from within web pages. Java programs can also be design as standalone applications, in that they can run independent of a browser such as Explorer or Netscape. The big thing about Java that has captured everybody's attention is the fact that it's platform-independent. This means that Java programs can run on just about every computer.

These applets are not to be confused with JavaScript which is discussed on this web site.

The benefits

Java's potential benefits are almost as revolutionary as the web itself. Java creates mini-executable programs (called applets) that are platform independent, compact enough to travel over phone wires and able to expand on anyone's system regardless of OS, make or model. Another great thing about Java is the two most popular browsers, Netscape and Explorer support Java without requiring a plug-in.

The future of...

In theory Java wins high marks for accessibility and compatibility. The reality is that we know many people who complain that their browsers still choke on Java, so our suspicion is that we'll be waiting a little longer before the Java hype matches realist. Regardless a lot of people and companies are investing heavily in Java that would suggest that the bugs will eventually get ironed out.

what could it do?

Because Java creates custom programs, it has the potential to create computational animation as opposed to sprite-based animation. This means that a Java applet could calculate a changing curve shape on the fly, react differently to changeable conditions, or build motion based on external input. Clearly for the right purposes Java as an animation delivery medium holds great promise. For simple things such as moving buttons or animated logos, Java is overkill.

How are JavaApplets used?

Haahaaa, the big question. How do we use JavaApplets exactly? Before you can implement it into your web pages it's a good idea to know a little bit about the syntax of it all. Syntax is a fancy name for computer grammar. Once you learn a little about the syntax you will be able change and alter the script to your liking. Don't worry i'll get you going with a few examples.

That's enough of that boring talk lets get using that magical stuff called JavaApplets.
