Joseph spent most of his life in the plumbing business. From 1937 to 1950 he had been in partnership in the Smith Nicklaus Plumbing business in Parkersburg. Because of his ill health, the partnership was dissolved and then he did maintenance work at the Borden Soy Processing Company in Waterloo. He and his wife were baptized into the Christian faith on March 6, 1952 and became members of the Bethel Lutheran Church by Confirmation on April 6, 1952
