Nicklaus Dies After Long Illness ------------------------------------- Many Years an Active Resident of Parkersburg and Vicinity ------------------------------------------------------------ After an illness of long duration, Joseph Nicklaus, one of the best known residents here died at his home in this city Sunday morning, death being caused by diabetes. The writer had known the deceased for many years and knew him to be an active, hardworking honest man, and an honorable upright citizen whose passing will be regretted by his many friends. Joseph John Nicklaus, was born September 15th, 1871, near Galena, Illinois. When but four years of age he moved to this part of the country and has made his home here ever since. On January 7, 1902 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Ostendorph, to this union four sons were born, all of whom survive their father. Joseph has been in ill health for some time, and last May he was taken to the hospital in Waverly where his case was diagnosed as diabetes. A week ago last Monday he was suddenly stricken, and on last Sunday morning, March 14, about 7 o'clock he passed away in restful sleep, his age being 54 years 5 months and 29 days. The bereaved one are his widow, and their four sons, Joseph, Harm, Ralph, Ernest Nicklaus, of Parkersburg, Iowa, besides two brothers, Peter and George and one sister Mrs. Anna Krammer, all of this place, also a few cousins, a number of nieces and nephews. Fraternally he was a member of the Modern Woodman of America. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, 1:30 at the home and 2 o'clock at the Congregational church, the pastor having charge of the service. Engelkes, Parkersburg Parkersburg, Iowa Eclipse and New Hartford Review Consolidated Wednesday, August 31, 1960 Obituary of Joseph John Nicklaus Joseph John Nicklaus, son of Joseph Nicklaus and Anna nee Ostendorp, was born on October 12, 1903, at Parkersburg, Iowa, and passed away at his home very suddenly from a heart attack late Saturday evening, August 27, having reached the age of 56 years, 10 months, and 15 days. He attended elementary and high school in Parkersburg, graduating from the Parkersburg high school in 1922. On June 2, 1928, he was united in holy matrimony with Mary Ann Hersey at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. This union was blessed with one son, Harley. He had spent most of his life in the plumbing business. From 1937 to 1950 he had been in partnership in the Smith-Nicklaus Plumbing business here in Parkersburg. Because of his ill health, this partnership was dissolved and since that time has been doing maintenance work at the Borden Soy Processing Company at Waterloo. He, together with his wife and son, was baptized into the Christian faith on March 6, 1952 and became a member of Bethel Lutheran Church by Confirmation on April 6, 1952. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, his son, Harley, of Waterloo, Iowa, his mother, Anna Nicklaus of Parkersburg, two brothers, Harm Nicklaus and Ernest Nicklaus, both of Parkersburg, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Ralph. Funeral Services were held Tuesday afternoon, August 30, 1960 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran church, Parkersburg, Iowa with the Rev. Russell W. Schilling, officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Engelkes Funeral Home, Parkersburg, Iowa. Nicklaus, son of Joseph and Anna Ostendorf Nicklaus was born at Parkersburg on October 23, 1906. He received his education in the Parkersburg Public School System. He had always made his home in Parkersburg with his parents and brother, Ernest. Harm submitted to surgery at the State University Hospital at Iowa City about 10 days ago and passed away early Monday morning at the age of 61 years. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Ralph and Joe. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Anna Nicklaus; 1 brother, Ernest, and a nephew, Harley Nicklaus all of Parkersburg. Funeral services will be today (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. at the Engelkes Funeral home with Rev. Nevin Haines officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
