How to determine when Lent begins
BACK TO LENT
The first day of Lent is called: Ash Wednesday. To determine the beginning of Lent :
Take the number of the current year, add one, then divide by 19.  Disregard the number - and look at the remainder. Then use the table on the right to determine the date. The following Sunday will be Easter. Subtract 40 days not including Sundays and will be Ash Wednesday.
Example:  2007 + 1 = 2008            2008 / 19 = 105 with a remainder of
13
Looking on the chart 13 = April 2nd  - the next Sunday is April 8 - which is Easter
April 8th  - 40 days = February 21st which is Ash Wednesday.
