Traditionally, the ashes for Ash Weds, come from buring palm fronds from the previous year Palm Sunday. |

|
Since Jesus retreated into the desert for 40 days and fasted before beginning His ministry. We join Him on His retreat, by taking time for contemplation, reflection, and preparation. Old times, we heated homes with fire from a wood stove and was not an important cleaning duty. So ashes could be seen over the house. As a mark of something burnt, gone. So ashes became a sign of remorse, repentance, and mourning. Back them when stopping by a friends house after someone died. One would gently say "Did you know you have ashes on your face?" Now we wear black arm bands as a sign, back then it was ashes. |

Lent is a time of a special meeting with Christ, who does not cease to speak about himself as "the light of the world". Lent is the blessed time in which each one of us can, in a particular way, pass through the area of light. A powerful light, an intense light comes from the Upper Room, from Gethsemane, from Calvary, and finally from the Sunday of the Resurrection.
