"Let me win.
But if I cannot win,
let me be brave in the attempt.
- Special Olympics Oath

"Special Olympics is a nonprofit program of sports training and competition for individuals with mental retardation. In June of 1988 shortly after I was hired as a Reserve Police Officer, I became involved with the Special Olympics Maine and the Maine Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run and have been a proud supporter raising approximately $10,000 for Maine Special Olympians over the past eighteen plus years. I have participated in every torch run since, attending, being in parades, handing out medals and volunteering at both Maine's Winter and Summer Olympics.

Eventhough I wasn't lucky enough to be chosen, I was nominated to run the torch for the State of Maine at the Special Olympics World Games several years ago in Connecticut.

This is a very worthwhile organization, Please Support Them!!! Can you help? They can sure use your assistance. Support your local Special Olympians. If you would like to support Special Olympics visit Special Olympics International, or if you would like to help Special Olympics Maine send a check. For Maine send a check payable to Special Olympics Maine to the Rumford Police Department, C/O: Ptl. Douglas Maifeld, 150 River Street, Rumford, Maine 04276-2029.

On March 26th, 1998, I was honored with being one of two officers in the State of Maine to be the first officers inducted into the Maine Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame. I was inducted for my over ten years of dedicated service to the Torch Run and for helping to further the goals of Special Olympics Maine. This was a very special day for me and one I'll always remember. Assisting in helping Special Olympics Maine has been a great pleasure of mine, both while representing the Rumford Police Department and volunteering my own time. Please Support your local Special Olympics. Attend some of their games.... You'll never forget the experience...

Plaque given at Induction to Hall of Fame

In October of 2000, I was one of four representatives of the State of Maine to attend the International Special Olympics Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

In May 2002, I was one of two Police Officers chosen by Special Olympics Maine to represent the State of Maine at a Salute to Hope, Honor and Courage in New York City. Click on the graphic below to read about my trip.

In June 2005, I was chosen to fly in the Lifeflight medical helicopter and land at the University of Maine in Orono. Upon landing, a Special Olympian athlete and I ran in with the torch to begin the 2005 Maine Special Olympics Summer Games.
